"Subete wo kaeru tame ni"

I've watched the raw episode 2 of Code Geass. Lelouch said something I thought was pretty interesting at the end of the episode. Just wonder if anyone else thought about it?

The last line of Lelouch was:「戻って参りました、殿下。すべてをかえるために」
"I've returned, your majesty. In order to ___ everything."

The blank space is "kaeru" かえる. In Japanese, kaeru have several meanings. There are different kanji for kaeru as well.

帰る、返る - to return
変える - to change
換える,替える - to exchange, to convert
代える - to represent, substitute
You'll find many more if you look up a dictionary. (I'll leave out "frog" and "hatch" because those to are not very likely, ah-uh.)

I wonder how the fansub will translate. I'm not doubting their ability. Either one they choose, there is still a possibility Lelouch meant something else...? What does Lelouch really mean by "kaeru"? To pay back all Britiania had done to him and the victims? To get back all that was lost to him in the invasion?

Frog sounds the most correct - I will use that in the sub! :D

the chinese sub translated it to to get everything back... so i think the english subs should use frog too :D

"In order to frog everything."

XD;;; That'll be the best line ever.

And kaeru also has the meaning of 'buy'. And 'feed'.

"I've come to buy everything back. 'cause I'm so rich I can afford a whole train of Sutherlands. Muahahaha."

In the context, I'd say it's most likely "change". I mean, he's heir to the Britannia empire, but he is going to be crucial in tearing it all down. But my knowledge of Japanese is extremely limited, so I wouldn't listen to me.

i would listen to you without knowing much japanese, i know a fair bit and that's got to be what he's saying. ^_^

I was thinking it was more of to change/return everything back to what it was? The meaning is almost similar.

I'm rooting for change too... since that's what he's trying to do, right? To change everything.

i'd guess "change"...
well, change is quite ambiguous comparing with the other ones...

Frog would be awesome, esp if he did frog everything.... you figure out how that works. :P
