[News] from Otakon 2011

During the Sunrise panel at Otakon this weekend, there was an open Q&A with Sunrise's anime producer/General Manager of Overseas Development, Masayuki Ozaki.

Q: Can you tell us anything about the new Code Geass spin-off series?

Ozaki: I knew that question was coming. The uh, next season of Code Geass is behind schedule. They're working hard. We're looking forward to releasing it next year. And it will take place in the same world as Lelouch except with different characters. And, the stage is set in Europe, so we'll see a lot of European countries. The new directer is Kazuki Akane, the director of Escaflowne.

Kazuki Akane?! Wow, my expectations for this series just increased about 100 percent -- granted, my expectations before weren't very high, but with him as director, this could turn out very well.

(I should say, Akane has some flawed series, but I have yet to dislike anything he's directed -- and Escaflowne and Noein are two of my favorite series.)

We've known that Kazuki Akane was involved since the end of 2010, technically, but yes...I think that's good too, because it should be quite interesting to see a different interpretation of this universe at the hands of a new creator.

(Although I do recognize Akane's talent, I'm more of a Taniguchi fan myself and will probably tend to miss some of the stylistic or thematic quirks he incorporated into Code Geass to begin with, regardless of its flaws).
