During the Sunrise panel at Otakon this weekend, there was an open Q&A with Sunrise's anime producer/General Manager of Overseas Development, Masayuki Ozaki.
Q: Can you tell us anything about the new Code Geass spin-off series?
Ozaki: I knew that question was coming. The uh, next season of Code Geass is behind schedule. They're working hard. We're looking forward to releasing it next year. And it will take place in the same world as Lelouch except with different characters. And, the stage is set in Europe, so we'll see a lot of European countries. The new directer is Kazuki Akane, the director of Escaflowne.

(I should say, Akane has some flawed series, but I have yet to dislike anything he's directed -- and Escaflowne and Noein are two of my favorite series.)

(Although I do recognize Akane's talent, I'm more of a Taniguchi fan myself and will probably tend to miss some of the stylistic or thematic quirks he incorporated into Code Geass to begin with, regardless of its flaws).

Set in the same world? Does this mean that it will take place a few years after the original series? Does this mean that the peace that has been established by so many sacrifices will be disturbed? I don't like it. Why don't they set it in an alternate universe?

The whole thing takes place in a.t.b. 2017, between R1 & R2 - we were told this about a year ago.

Thanks for the info!

The series is going to take place around the same time of the first series, 2017 atb, possibly during the year that passed between both seasons.
For previous information that should still be relevant, see here:

It's nice to know they are finally admitting the damned obvious.

I do hope that they finish it, though.
