Oh, Rollo...

My thoughts on what Rollo is afraid of is below the cut...

I thought it weird that Rollo was acting so scared when Lelouch asked for his locket back. Later, he seemed set on killing Lelouch. wtf?

The only explanation I could think of was that Rollo didn't want to give away the only thing that made him human. I think he's a really confused kid who is just learning about love and families and all that. He probably doesn't even have his own birthday.

Now, I wonder what the hell is inside that locket of his. Photos of him and his brother? Or could it be some sort of activation device and totally throw off my synopsis.

I agree with you in that Rollo has some psychological need for family, a desire that's going to get in the way of him and his mission. Personally, I don't think Rollo has his own birthday, either; he's too obsessed with the mere concept of it for him to have one. He's grasping on to any familial ties with Lelouch and as a result, that's compromising his judgement with carrying out his duties.

It's a photo of Lelouch inside. With lots of sparkles. COUNT ON IT.

And hearts. Don't forget the hearts.

Let's just add in unicorns, too, for good measure.

With rainbows and sunshine!

I honestly thought the locket belonged to Nunnally.

It should've gone to Nunnally on her birthday (Lelouch probably bought it ahead of time), but it technically doesn't 'belong' to her anymore since she wasn't the recipient. :/

Which is to say...now I wonder what and how Lelouch'll make up for that (if he survives).

You know I wonder if that wasn't an implanted memory and it was actually the Emperor who gave Rollo the locket?

:/

I'm wondering if perhaps the locket holds a clue to Nunnally's whereabouts or something else that Lelouch can't find out.

I also liked the way that Rollo stopped and paused for a second when Milly made that offhand comment about Shirley becoming part of his family.
They keep throwing us hints that the poor kid wants to be loved. It's making me like him something fierce already. :

Yeah. I personally think Rollo needs family. Besides, he could be a good ally of thr Black Knights, given that Lelouch does not finish him off in the next episode that I dearly hope he would not do.

Agreed. Rollo might be a heartless murderer, Geass user, l33t Knightmare pilot and whatnot, but deep inside, he's probably just a child looking for some love. I really can't wait to know his past.

My impression is, during the year that he was sent to observe Lelouch, he actually grew really fond of Lelouch and thought of him as an actual brother, a family, which he might never have gotten. And he does treasure that locket a lot. Also, he didn't want to believe that Lelouch was Zero until reality slammed it right into his face, that's probably when he has to decide - will he proceed with the mission faithfully and off Lelouch, or will he let his feelings get the better of him and spare what probably is the only family he's had?

But meh, we've only seen him for 3 episodes. Not a lot to be based off of, so something might totally happen in like the next 10 episodes and it turns out that Rollo really is heartless. Who knows?

I keep forgetting how long Rollo has been with Lelouch, a whole year?

But I'm thinking the Emperor or V.V. gave him the locket and messed with Lelouch's memories. I don't think the locket holds significant sentimental value to Rollo, but something like a secret to his powers or Nunnally's whereabouts or something.

I think Rolo was trained to be as efficent as possible, that was the reason he gave Viletta for killing their coworkers. It was most efficient, most effective and insured geass was kept top secret. He killed mechanically, emotionlessly. Rivalz mentioned that Rolo doesn't have any friends, meaning he probably doesn't relate well with other people. Rolo is probably very lonely and isolated, he wants to be Lelouch's brother, he wants to receive love and be given birthday presents that celebrate the fact that he was born.

(I hope a picture of Nunnally or Marianne is also in the locket)
