I agree with you about the boring Gundam Seed comparisons - boring for me because I have never watched Gundam Seed, it means nothing to me, and it has nothing to do with Code Geass. ;)
Lol! I would say Zero already just as bad as Brittania. >:) (I don't *think* any Brittanian commanders have deliberately killed a whole load of Brittanian soldiers and then lied to the rest of the army that they blew themselves up and their sacrifice mustn't be wasted...ah well; at the least the Brittanian footsoldiers know what cause they're *really* fighing for, eh!)
On Suzaku, he's just a bit confused. It's as if he hasn't sat himself down and had an inner dialogue about these contradictions between his thoughts and actions; I think clearly he's joined the army looking for what he's getting - promotion up the ranks within the system so that he can start to change it from within when he attains a high enough position.
That is where he differs from Lelouch - he wants to change the system from within, not smash it down from the outside. Suzaku's motivation is also apparently more driven by what might happen to Japan in the future, where Lelouch's motivation is entirely personal (which is why his deluded 'Knights' are in for such a ruse awakening). Suzaku might be completely deluded of course; but that seems to be his thinking.
However, Suzaku's as much an 'ends justify the means' guy as Lelouch in some ways, as clearly, he's having to compromise some of his ideals to get to the place he needs to be to effect change. Welcome to the real world. Lol.
It also seems to be the case that Suzaku is changed and is changing from the way he used to be, with his flashbacks hinting at dark deeds in his past which he is ashamed of. He's still shifting about within his new moral code; it's possible that he now knows where he wants to go ideally, but sometimes (out of habit and necessity most likely), he still reverts back to his old behaviour. He hasn't squared what he does with what he's saying yet. He doesn't need a smacking in the way Lelouch does though; I think he may have already had it. So we're seeing Suzaku trying to claw his way up where Lelouch is definitely going straight down.
