Actually, I want him to be dead. I love him a lot, he's one of my favourite characters of all time, and it's because of that that I want him to be dead. His sacrifice would... lose some of its meaning, otherwise.
I know he's dead, but I want him to be alive. I knew a looooong time ago in the series that he'd die in the end. It's very standard for anime.
Even so, like many heroic deaths in anime, I felt it was entirely avoidable and it just killed me. :( With so much power, even if he were hated, he could have abolished the Empire, done something to be good, instead of going out as he did. It was frustrating for me.
I was sure he was dead, but a few conversations on the comm made me doubt. In fact, I quite like to be undecided between - He died (quite logical, and still my favourite one) - CC got his soul with her prayers and now he's in her inner world and they will bicker til the end of time (well, til she finds someone to kill her) - He's got Charles' code, but he didn't know it, so it was not in the plan ; but afterwards CC went and dig his grave and they will live together forever - He's got CC's code (he had a promise to keep !) and after she dies naturally he will live alone forever to atone for his sins (ending which is clearly darker than the first one... but are we sure he did not deserve it ?) OK, the only reason why I'm not satisfied with Lelouch dying is because it doesn't give anything to do to CC in these last episodes... in tiself, it was very, very good.
I believe Lelouch is dead because I can't imagine the series ending any other way. I can't remember which episode it was maybe 23 or 24. I was like okay he's going to die. I can't see all of this going in any other direction. And if he had lived I think I would have been a little pissed.
Plus I'm used to my favorite characters dying so it's wasn't too much of a fatal blow. The most painful thing about his death was who killed him. The entire scene between Lelouch and Suzuku was so damn heartbreaking.
Dead, because otherwise he would have sacrificed hundreds of people only to escape to live his own carefree life while pushing all of his crimes and responsibilities onto Suzaku and traumatizing Nunnally in the process.
Actually. I think he's alive, even though I want him to be dead. Apart from wanting him to be with Rolo, I agree with everyone that his remaining alive cheapens everything he's done, but I can't help but have very little faith in his motivations/sunrise's plothax. =_='
I would forgive it just that little bit more, though, if didn't realize that he'd had the code transferred, and that he was immortal forever as a punishment after willingly sacrificing everything, but how likely is that?
If he took C.C.'s code to fulfill his promise, however... eh, I don't know. I think I agree with the above. Living means he would have pushed all the responsibility for his crimes onto others, and while I can see him doing it, I kind of want to believe he redeemed himself in the end. Simply saying 'he will have to face eternity alone' doesn't mean that he's truly going to atone. Scapegoating his name in the history books isn't something he cares about, after all. He despises the name 'Vi Britannia', so screw it, he hasn't really lost anything if he's still alive.
Essentially, I think he's alive, but I want him to be dead. ._.
I dunno. If it was anyone other than Sunrise that was responsible for the show i'd say he was dead. However since it was Sunrise he could very well be alive. Mwu la Flaga anyone?
Otherwise they can hack up another series and it would just be a whole revolving circle. It ended well and pretty much resolved everything in a roundabout way, keeping Lelouch alive would just be pointless and distract from the whole ending. Not that I wouldn't put Sunrise past that.
I'm hopeful that he is alive, being inconspicuous with C.C. in the countryside - maybe on the Orange Farm 8D hur, country folk. <3 I don't think its a cop-out since they left it so open in the air of if he died or not, if they straight out showed us he was still alive, balloons and all, then maybe it would. But, its subtle and not as important as with those who are still alive, and how they are going on with their lives and such.
I don't mind if he were dead though, depressed sure, but either way its still a beautiful ending ... with some holes, but works regardless.
If you had asked me this yesterday I would have said 100% dead but after talking about it with others lets just say I am not sure what I think. I think it is purposely ambiguous and up to the viewer so I voted undecided.
The debate is pointless because it's obvious that they set it up so you can think he got a code from someone and lived. Much like the ending to FF7 (before Enix ate Square and had them fuck it over with 20 billion sequels/spinoffs) it's supposed to be open to interpretation and therefore there is not and (unless they get badgered into a sequel by the executives) there never will be a canon answer to whether or not he lived.
(in b4 interview/picture drama comes along where they confirm it one way or the other)
From what I've heard. Lelouch is still alive because he 'killed' his parents and got his father's code, thus needing Suzaku to kill him so he gain immortality?
I really did not read the other comments, so excuse me if this had been said before. =/
