As it was brought to attention, found a not-so-recent blog entry about C.C.'s old name.

Skeptical about calling it her "original" name, yet... Even though, in the CLAMP Mutuality book, sketches of C.C. had the same Katakana of that name next to her. A random placeholder name? Or was it really going to be her true name? Which is kind of odd, considering the movement of Lelouch's lips goes a bit further than two...

...I really hope it's not her name. Maybe it's a shorten version of "her real name"? Since as you said Lelouch's lips move more syllables than that.

I think that was only used in Nightmare of Nunnally. I don't remember C.C. being called the Gray Witch in the show.

That placeholder name sucks :V

I honestly believe it's should be Celtic like Morrígan even though she was represented as a raven/crow.

Whoa! I thought it was Morgan Le Fay too! Plus it looks like it could fit. I was kinda sad not much of Arthurian legend was placed in Code Geass.

No. :"(

I think Sera would be a good name!
It could be short for Scheherazade, it would fit with everyone knowing who she was once they heard the name. But it seems very unlikely :\
Sera could also be short for Seraphina that comes from seraphim; an order of high ranking angels supposed to have six wings.
Sela didn't give such interesting results simply meaning rock\cliff, but one of the places said The moon, I also check to see if there were any alternate spellings of Selene the Greek moon goddess but it appeared to be non. But her name could be based on Selas which means light.
as for the post fox_holland linked to I think Cliodna fits the best, Three birds could be the three known geasses she have given out, immortality and drowning also seems to fit C.C. The lover part can also fit in pretty nice depending on ones point of view.

But there is a possibility that Sera\Sela isn't the real name at all but an early name that later was changed, much like how early Lelouch had white hair.

Hope the post isn't to messy ^^;

So basically... it was a last minute name change, and nothing more.

I wonder why ppl seem to need to know every little thing? Leaving something a mystery isn't such a big deal.

if it was only written in katakana, it could be Cera. just a thought.

It was intended to be セラ (lit. Sera, can be interpreted as Cera, Sella, Cerra, etc.), but at some point during the planning stage that got scrapped. Whether or not it is actually a part of C.C.'s real name, we'll never know.

According to those who believe that Jesus Christ had a daughter with Mary Magdalene, the daughter was supposedly named Sera. The Knights Templar also supposedly had a connection in keeping that bloodline safe (the Holy Grail) It could be an agnostic text/christian mythology/legend reference...

I remember they did the same thing in Final Fantasy IX with Princess Garnet. You can go on a quest and find out her real name is Sera, and I was ,disappointed until I realized the mythology reference. I think Sera is a Hebrew name meaning umm...oh geez, I'd have to look it up I've forgotten...but anyway, they could've been going for something like that...

I'd feel bad if C.C.'s name was for a trend for naming robots and a cat...

The only other clue I had never investigated was that her name was already familiar to Lelouch.

you're all over analyzing. her name holds the secret of Cheddar Cheese cult, an infamous secret society in brittania that someday will build empire of pizza.

Hm. I really am curious as to why they never directly revealed her name in the animu.

Seconding the Cheddar Cheese cult theory

Muh... Sera doesn't fit, to me. It still sounds a bit too 'alien.' And also, the syllables... probably, that was the name they were originally going to give her character, and then they decided on CC.

I think her actual name is much more normal. Like... on a forum I frequent, it was suggested that her name might be "Elizabeth", judging by the syllables. I think that would make sense. It's pretty, and it's normal, and it's just... it would make sense to me.

Well, I think it's quite possible that Sera is just the name they gave her in the initial planning stages, and then later changed it as they decided what the series would be about. Considering that Geass was originally a story about a soldier who morally disagreed with his superior officer, going from Sera to C.C. with absolutely no connections between the two doesn't seem like that much of a leap of faith.

Cera/Sera was the name that she was going to be given in the earrly stages but it was dropped (I expected someone would already mention this, but nope)

But supposedly, in the Novels, her name is supposed to be announced. Though when people tried to show evidence and tell people, they didn't care. A name wont make a difference anyways.

For those who want to know, this name fits the pronounciation perfectly AND fits to the reason why C.C. did not want her name.

Obviously, being a child slave, she wouldn't have a name so assume the nun gave it to her. It fits perfectly.

Cecaniah Corabelle, Which translates to free maiden. But no one has confirmed it as true
