I agree that Geass does have a uniqueness to it with the way it approaches things and the odd balance between the school life and the war that one doesn't usually find in mechs, at least not one involving this much use of said school life. Having such a flawed main character helps a lot too since it's very hard not to like someone who's just so humane at times.
When I first saw Lelouch, I laughed long and hard and said it was like Clamp transported Tsubasa's Vamp!Kamui into Gundam. I think the names cracked me up too, especially Suzaku's.
