You have a better memory than I! Forgive me. MyAnimeList.net's incomplete records claim that I started Gurren Lagann in August 2009, so that gives significant credibility to your claim!
It was my first convention after watching Code Geass also, so I was at the height of my obsession. (It's dipped ever-so-slightly, but it still reigns, and I could name you eighty characters off the top of my head right now...) I am entering this AMV into the Manifest 2010 AMV competition, and rewatching the clips to make it reminded me of how I felt the first eight times I saw the series.
To give you closure on how our discussion probably went: If I was iffy on whether I liked Gurren Lagann, I later gave it another chance. I finished it and now appreciate how epic it is. It holds a unique place in the list of things I enjoy. I have recommended it to people. It's no Code Geass, but, really, what is?
