Title: The World That Didn't Exist
Fandom: Code Geass
Characters/Pairings: Nunnally
Summary: Nunnally wants to believe something other than the truth.
Notes: Speedficcing with
benizakura,
shadowgirl1605, and
liralen; prompt was "you can close your eyes." ...This is a totally different characterisation of Nunnally that I'm trying out. orz.
"Nothing exists but the universe and you."
-- Mark Twain, The Mysterious Stranger
She blocked it from her mind; the blood, the screams, then the silence. She blocked the weight -- that dead and heavy weight, the limbs that wrapped lifelessly around her body -- from her chest, from her body; she blocked out the pain, the glassy pale eyes, and his horrified expression.
She turned it all off, tuned it all out. Nothing was real, she thought. Nothing had happened. If she turned a blind eye -- if she never opened them again -- things would be back to normal, things would happen like they'd happened before.
The wheelchair was a brace, the darkness her world. She blandly took in everything that was said, but smiled anyway, as though it mattered. This was not real, she told herself; it did not exist.
Nothing was real. Mother's death was a scam; she would wake up one day, her eyes functioning in new ways, to see the world she'd left far behind in order to enter an alternate universe that was all her own. No one could penetrate her darkness, and it was a coma. Nothing was real, here: one day, she would wake up (Nunnally said, quite firmly, to that doubting voice in her mind) and Lelouch would be laughing with Clovis and beating him in chess; One day, she'd wake up, open her eyes, and really see again.
Here, there was nothing to see. Nothing was real.
But no matter how long she closed her eyes -- a second, a week, a month, a decade -- she could not escape the reality of it all (that she was wasting her life away, not wanting to see because the life she knew was gone). She could close her eyes, but the world was real, and she couldn't pretend otherwise forever.
