I like the "heir" theory. As I said to someone in my journal earlier, imo this is not a "new" Suzaku but an expression of the Suzaku before colonization. If he can kill his father, it really shouldn't be so shocking that he'd turn in a friend so easily (because no matter how close the boys were in that year together, it was still a very short time span and people change).
I'd love to learn more about Suzaku's past. It'd be fascinating if both boys did turn into their fathers.
