The split is kind of arbitrary and intuitive, but to me it's important that Lelouch is smiling at the end of the cave scene, and yet is kicking and screaming in the throne room. It might be just Charles' presence working its trick on him, it might be just that when Lelouch smiled he didn't know what Suzaku would do to him, but that smile was way too emphasized in the narration and I like to think that something changed between the two friends in their way to Britannia. I think the Suzaku who shouts in rage "He is Lelouch!" at Kallen's weak "Zero!" is not the same who obeys the Emperor's orders and holds Lelouch down when he is being brainwashed. It feels like in the cave Lelouch was still close to Suzaku, but now Suzaku is making a huge effort to detach himself, or pretend to be detached, to not care, because Lelouch has become his war prize. In fact, I love how both scenes are about Lelouch and his choices, not Zero the terrorist at all. Sure, revenge is still a fundamental key in both scenes, but their interaction has changed somehow. So yeah, I'd say they are different levels of Suzakus, even if the difference is very subtle indeed.
