I think Suzaku is tired of faking and was only doing it for the sake of seeming like he was all right around Lelouch and the others so his tricksy self wouldn't be suspected. But you raise a good point about him wanting to remain detached but showing his true self to the KotR. He does have authority around the KotR; maybe he just feels more secure with them because he truly believes they respect him.
Actually that makes a lot of sense. He does tell the Knights he will bring everything out into the open that night. He might very well have revealed his hand so Zero would move against him. Lelouch does lose all sense when Nunnally's involved and will be spontaneous.
