Hmm, I misunderstood your reasoning then (yeah, late night reading. -_-;). However, I still feel that until there's evidence of the Geass working so that while it is deactivated, the affects cease, but are then reawoken once the power is reactivated, it's not safe to assume that is how it works. There are many different stipulations to the Geass, all of which are different for each power. While Lelouch's memory was buried, those under the power of his Geass might have been released from it's power, but I find it unlikely that it'd then start up again. That would suggest that Lelouch would have some sort of on-going connection with his "victims," which enables the Geass to work, but only while he's aware of his Geass. The animation used to show the Geass in affect seems to only temporarily cause a change in a person's characteristics, as dictated by the power of the Geass.

If his Geass did cease to affect his victims, than I think it's unlikely that it would be "started up" again, once he regained his memory. I'd be more inclined to think that once it was turned off for someone, it'd stay off. Plus, he wouldn't be able to Geass them again. If it reactivated for people, then that be too similar to the ability to use the Geass on people multiple times, which is not possible.

And while Suzaku's sub-conscious mind might be self-preserving (which could be argued as an attribute of all humans, or at least most), his conscious mind is what's being affected by the Geass. It's also his conscious mind that led him to be self-sacrificing. His choices, before being subjected to Lulu's Geass, lent towards martyr like characteristics because (like Mao points out) Suzaku is trying to atone for killing his father. That's what's being changed by the Geass.

The Geass changes a character's outer characteristics for its given period of time. The sub-conscious affect is memory loss, as C.C. mentions. In the case of Euphie, her resistance could've stemmed from both conscious and sub-conscious objections (that are possibly strengthened by Suzaku's presence?), but ultimately it's her conscious decisions and perception that are changed by the Geass.
