There's no doubt Lelouch is a very interesting protagonist. But what makes him so is that there is very little difference between him and the people he hates so much. He's just like his Father, which is the amusing irony. The people around him are just his pawns, in the same way that the people around Clovis were his pawns.
I'm also amused by the fact that people are hugely delighted by the idea of the brilliant Lelouch, but he's only actually been brilliant when his opponants have been rather rubbish tactically, or purely unlucky. Geass has given him an inflated idea of his own ability. Cornelia pwned him easily, and in a situation where he couldn't use the Geass, he was screwed. Then even when he upped his game against her, he didn't factor in the Lancelot properly, which he should have done as he well knew it existed. Both times, if it hadn't been for CC, it would have been game over. She protects her investment, that one. He's been lucky.
I get the feeling that Suzaku might have been this sort of morally ambiguous person in the past and is trying to make amends with this personality he has created for himself; if he plays this role hard enough and with enough heart, he may feel able to become this person and leave the person he used to be behind.
