I thought the "senpai" bit was because of one of two reasons: 1) Lelouch is the Vice President of the Student Council, so he called him that out of respect. 2) Gino is an airhead. jusrecht wrote that one fic with him trying to figure out which Japanese honorific to use with Suzaku, and I just imagine Gino just getting these things all sorts of wrong with anyone.
