His Only Dream

“…As you all know, with the recent crumbling of the Britannian Empire, Japan will be willing to help any former Britannian territories if there is a need for financial or military aid…And of course, any former Britannian citizens who wish to stay in Japan, or seek refuge are freely welcome into our borders—”

“Prime Minister,” One of the reporters asked from the crowd. “It’s been almost a year since Japan was liberated once more, but, the people want to know—what happened to Zero?”

At once, there came a rush of questions from the crowd. Everyone wanted to know the one question that had been plaguing the Japanese people ever since all traces of the man had disappeared into thin air.

And as the camera focused on the one at the podium, Kururugi Suzaku gave them their answer.

“Zero is dead.”

A collective gasp came from the crowd as Suzaku continued, “He was killed shortly after Britannia fell.”

“How did he die?” Another reporter asked, pencil in hand.

Only those green eyes, staring blankly at the crowd, knew the truth. “A faceless assassin.”

“But…if Zero is gone, then that means—”

Sighing, Suzaku spoke, “The man called Zero had a vision for this world; and, for the most part, he achieved his goal. Though I never agreed with all his policies, without him, Japan would have never been liberated from Britannian rule. For that, I am grateful.”

“Prime Minister Kururugi, I can understand your feelings on the subject, but after our country just got back on its feet—if Zero, the hope of our people is gone—”

“There’s something you have to remember; though Zero was a symbol—he was also a man.” And with that, Kururugi Suzaku stepped down from the podium, unable to take any more questions about ‘Zero’ in a press conference he didn’t want to do anyway.

The subject of Zero was something that he didn’t ever want to talk about, not again.

Even back then—before everything had been revealed to be his very worst suspicions—it seemed like his fate was constantly tied with Zero’s. He had always wondered why; after all, he was nothing—just an Honorary Britannian, he had no worth to the military at all.

But when Zero came into power—he rose from ‘just an honorary Britannian’ to start to become someone powerful; personal knight to Princess Euphemia, even. And still, he wondered why he was always Zero’s target, and not the princess herself.

He had thought it was because of his lineage—because he was the son of the former Prime Minister Kururugi. Once Zero seemed to have learned of that—his darkest secret—it all made sense to him that way. Blackmailing him because he could have been useful as another symbol to the Japanese made perfect sense—in a world that he wished.

But, it still didn’t fit.

Zero knew things he should not have known. He acted in a way that was all to similar—even their ideals—no, Suzaku had wished so many times it hadn’t been that way; there were so many other people it could have been, so many millions in all the world, and yet, out of all those people—

It had to be him.

Perhaps it never was that his destiny was tied to Zero, but instead, it was tied to Lelouch.
But he knew—he had come to believe—that it couldn’t have been Lelouch doing all this. No, the Lelouch he knew, a long time ago—was different then Zero.

Yes, very different. It was that cursed power—that geass—that did this to him. It turned him into a monster, a monster incapable of remorse or gaining forgiveness.

Back then, he thought—hoped—that he could fix it all. If it was all erased and forgotten, the Lelouch would return to being Lelouch, instead of the monster he had become. Though it was cruel, Suzaku knew it was the best thing for him—forgetting it all was the kindest thing he could ever do, after realizing to what lows his best friend had sunk.

He thought that was it—all said and done. Lelouch was Lelouch once again, and Zero was gone forever. Now, Suzaku could change the world from the inside, like he wished, and his friend could live in peace and happiness once again.

But Zero was not to die so easily.

Suzaku hoped—and wished—for so long, that it was someone else masquerading as Zero. It was easy for such a thing to happen—Zero had become such a symbol for the Japanese, that anyone could have made a similar costume and started speaking the ideals of Zero to the world once again.

But though Suzaku wished, he was once again to be disappointed. The second Zero was the same as the first, and he knew Suzaku all too well. Though it was hard, Suzaku had to admit it in the end, that Lelouch had risen as Zero once again.

And after everything, after they had gone their separate ways; after he had managed to liberate Japan, and topple Britannia—at last, in the end, they had met once again.

And that was when Zero the destroyer finally succumbed to it all; the destruction was complete, and it was time for the rebirth. For that Zero—and Lelouch—were no longer needed.

Giving another sigh, Suzaku could see that scene in front of him once again. Suzaku had known why Lelouch had drawn him there. His best friend had never even raised a finger, or spoke any words in his defense.

Perhaps even from the moment he donned the mask of Zero, he had wanted this—once the final phase was complete, and everything he had wished for was achieved—everyone around him was gone—he wished for death.

And, to the people of Japan, and the world, he would be fondly remembered—Zero had gone out like a matyr, instead of a disgraced criminal.

And Suzaku could never forgive him.

Suzaku had wished for death for so long—just to die in atonement for the one sin that could not be forgiven and yet—he now bore the responsibility of rebuilding this new world that Lelouch had created.

Lelouch had made sure, even back then, that Suzaku would carry out his duty—with the geass that his best friend had cast on him, he couldn’t die even if he wanted to now.

He would have to live out his entire life, until he died natural death that the geass couldn’t prevent. He was cursed with something he never wanted—a long, long life of suffering.

There was only one good thing about that, however—at least he was still alive to make sure that everything Lelouch had destroyed could be rebuilt in the way it should be.

Unfortunately, there were some things destroyed that not even he could fix.

Suzaku’s hand remained on the doorknob for a long time, before he finally turned it, and entered into that small room.

Taking one step inside, he felt a crumple beneath his shoe. Looking down, he saw what he had stepped on—a paper crane.

It wasn’t hard to do that here—the whole room was covered in them.

There, in the center of the room, seated at a small table, sat Nunally, with a stack of paper in front of her—as she folded crane after crane.

Sayako, once again in her old maid’s uniform, also sat beside her, giving a small smile to Suzaku as he came in. “I’m sorry, Kururugi-san,” she said, giving a small bow. “I try to clean up in here, but she doesn’t like it if I move any of them.”

“That’s all right,” Suzaku sighed as he sat down at the table as well. “As long as it makes her happy…”

Nunnally’s happiness—that’s all that Lelouch wanted.

Sayako turned back to Nunnally, smiling, “Nunnally, dear, there’s someone here to see you today—“ pulling Nunnally’s hand away from the half-folded crane, she placed it on top of Suzaku’s.

In an instant, Nunnally froze up, feeling the hand beneath hers. “Suzaku...?”

Suzaku smiled sadly, “That’s right, Nunnally, I’m here again.”

Nunnally suddenly gripped his hand tightly. “Suzaku…will Nii-sama and I be safe here? I hear there’s going to be a war soon—Nii-sama doesn’t like to talk about it, but…we’ll all be safe, right?” Tears started forming at the corner of her closed eyes. “We won’t be separated?”

Suzaku’s smile fell. Nunnally…she was back to those days right after she and her brother came to Japan when they were just children—right before the war that had torn them all apart for seven years…Perhaps that was the happiest time she had spent in her life.

“Of course not,” Suzaku promised her. “I’ll always be here, for you…Lelouch made me promise that, after all.”

Nunnally nodded, the tears fading. “That’s good…but Nii-sama…he doesn’t think so. He says the war might even come here, and if that happens—”

“It won't,” Seeing her like this always seemed to bring him to the verge of tears, as well. “I promise, the war won’t come here. And if it does, I will protect you, Nunnally!”

He would protect her like he hadn’t had the chance to protect her before.

Nunnally’s hand slowly retracted from his grip, and, just like that, everything had faded. She left the memory she had of those years ago, and instead went back to the paper, folding, folding once again.

“You had better go,” Sayako told him. “Once she’s like this—she’s likely to get upset if something distracts her.”

“Yeah,” he sighed, standing up. “Well…goodbye for today, Nunnally…”

As he left her small room where she was confined day and night, his fingers curled into a fist. Liberating Japan was one thing, but…why did she have to suffer!

Getting back to his small office, knowing there was so many papers waiting for him, he was first met with his secretary greeting him. “Good Evening, Prime Minister Kururgi—is something wrong?”
Suzaku was silent for a long moment, before asking, “Get me my car ready. I’m going to go somewhere.”

As he stepped out of the car onto the soft grass, Suzaku wondered how long it had been since he last been here—ten years, almost?

And yet, the Kururugi Estate looked the same as ever.

Though the grass was overgrown by years of neglect—the old place was the same as it had been when he was a boy. It was here that he had spent most of his childhood—here that he first met Lelouch and Nunnally.

Walking around, he began to recognize some of the old places—was it here that he had found Nunnally that day she had disappeared?

He remembered that event clearly—the day he had Lelouch had truly become friends.

Lelouch…how could he have not seen that he was Zero until nearly the end? Even back then he had hated Britannia, even back then, he had wished for a better world…

A better world…

“I will never allow the strong to bully the weak!” was what Zero said. “My new Japan shall be a place of freedom, of equality—where justice will always be served!”

“Justice…huh…” Suzaku muttered to himself, remembering those days of his youth.

“Prime Minister, what is the meaning of this press conference? After the last one where—”

“I will answer all of those questions in time, but first, I would like to say something,” Suzaku spoke, more resolved than ever. “It is clear to me that now, after Britannia has fallen and the world is in disarray, that Japan must help rebuild this new world. We must set an example for the other powers of this world to follow, so that another empire like Britannia is never created.”

“And, what is it that you propose, Prime Minister Kururugi?”

Suzaku’s green eyes were never more determined. “A change from within our very country. Japan was recently liberated, as you all remember. We returned to what we used to be. However, it was that very system that allowed us to fall to Britannia so easily. We should change our country, and change it for the better. Our people have never given up hope—they always believed in what Zero has said. If they continue to believe, it will become a reality.”

“What reality are you referring to, Prime Minister?”

“A new world order. A place of equality, and freedom—where justice to all remains absolute. A place were the strong are never allowed to bully the weak, but instead use their powers to protect the weak. A place where the people are not identified by their race, but by their hearts instead!”

“And this new country shall be called—The United States of Japan!”

Yeah, all I have to say about this is, if Suzaku does become the new prime minister and does something like this in the end, I will fangirl SO HARD.
