I think I'm happier with Lelouch being dead. I mean, yes, I love him very much as a character and it makes me incredibly sad, but I've seen far too many dead character cop-outs lately, and having him alive would just ruin the complete feeling.
I do admit that it's possible he's the driver there, though.
