Zero’s Requiem was a ruse set up by the Britannian Empire. It was all a big drama staged by The Black Knights so they could create a peaceful Japan. And Zero was the star of the show.

They planned it so they could reclaim the power that Schneizel had inherited, and destroy the Britannian Empire at the same time. Only a legendary hero like Zero could have earned Schneizal’s trust. Freeing the Japanese people was to be his greatest mission. Everything was going according to plan, but then something happened that nobody could have predicted. Suzaku fired a Britannian-made missle at Tokyo. The Black Knights demanded the empire provide proof that it wasn’t involved. They couldn’t just abort the operation to reclaim Japan. So the operation itself was greatly expanded and revised.

The authorities in Britannia knew that to prove its innocence, they had to get rid of Lelouch, and that one of their own would have to do the job. The public could not be allowed to find out about it – not ever. This, they concluded, would be the best way to keep it under wraps. Lelouch wouldn’t be allowed to come back home alive… and he wouldn’t be allowed to kill himself. His life would be ended by his most beloved friend. That was the way the people wanted it. That’s the mission he was given. And he had no choice but to carry it out… his death by your hands was a duty he had to fulfill. Out of duty he turned his back on his own comrades. A lesser man would have been crushed by such a burden. The taint of disgrace will follow him to his grave. Future generations will revile him… in The Black Knights, as a despicable traitor with no sense of honor, and in Japan, as a monster who unleashed a nuclear catastrophe. He will go down in official history as a war criminal. And no one will ever understand him .That… was his final mission.

And like a true soldier, he saw it through to the end. But I think he wanted you, of all people… to know the truth. He wanted to live on in your memory; not as a soldier, but as a man. But… he was forbidden to tell you himself. That’s why she told me. Suzaku… history will never know what he did. No one will ever learn the truth. His story, his debriefing… will endure only in your heart. Everything he did, he did for his country. He sacrificed his life and his honor for his native land. He was a real hero.

He was a true patriot.
