Seriously, I can't decide which side is less wrong in this. I don't approve of abusing the ASS comment syntax, but neither do I approve of resisting new and better technologies such as Matroska, .264 and ASS.
Linux and Windows folks: There is no need to recompile mplayer unless you want the more advanced ASS features such as text placement and embedded fonts. The standard binary supports basic ASS and won't show the {} comments.
Mac folks: I can't personally help you since I don't have access to a Mac, but I've been told that these (http://www.haque.net/software/mplayer/mplayerosx/builds/) are binary releases. They should work fine.
