I'm in the process of writing a few CG fics, and I need some help with the timeline.
At series start, what season was it? And at the time of the ZR, what season was it? >_>; I couldn't really tell since the students don't have different uniforms for summer/winter. I don't remember this ever being actually stated in the anime itself, so... if anyone have any guesses, it would be great.
Another thing. What are those knives/short blades that Xingke use called?

Thank you!

Well...episode 5 of R2 was in May/June, since it was on/near Viletta's birthday...

Yeah, I'm writing something too and it's a little frustrating.

The long sleeves and the boys' uniform jacket over the shirt are tipical of winter uniforms (there's to say we'll never see Summer uniforms...). However Villetta's birthday is June the 01st and season 2 starts around that time (students are supposed to switch to summer uniform in July).
Zero was caught around a year before the start of season 1 so let's say he was caught around end of May/begining of June. Since they'll stay in the same schoolyear through all season 1 I'll say the series should have started in fall... no idea about the Zero Requiem because there were time skips. However Rivalz was still wearing the Ashford uniform meaning he was still in his last school year. School in Japan end around the end of March so I'll say Zero Requiem was before the end of March.

Consider this a very temptative effort to fix dates because I didn't have the time to check the episodes and make calculations...

You're welcome!

Does R1 really last six months or more? There was obviously a certain amount of passage of time as Lelouch was building the Black Knights, but I never got the impression that much time went by.

I don't know for sure. The first series shows us a total of 39 days (maybe more if by mistake I've placed two happening in the same day but it shouldn't be less) in the life of Lelouch... but in between those days time goes by and I've no idea how many days are in between the days we're shown (Sometimes it's said 14, sometimes it's just one day after the other, sometimes it's not said at all).
Unless Sunrise release an official timetable it's impossible to know for sure...

Code Geass was always very bad with time. All they'd ever say was the year or "__ months later." The light novels give dates, but those aren't canon so I don't know how reliable it would be. I always felt the first one started in fall and the second one in spring, but that's just my own opinion. Most time periods would be speculation since there's very little to go on. Just make your best guess.

On TV it's always Spring! (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/Ptitleqlm0pv2xb236)
If you [...] can't even remember the last time any of these things [brown/red leaves, snow, summer vacation] occurred outside a seasonal episode, then that's because It's Always Spring.
Cartoon characters tend to have a Limited Wardrobe, which generally does not lend itself to cold weather. Furthermore, school is often a plot element in cartoons about kids, so that rules summer out of the question. Finally, it is probably easier to just put green leaves on every tree and to never draw leaves lying on the ground, so ultimately, the lack of seasonal change is a matter of convenience.

Everybody here has provided answers based on canon so here's the answer based on meta. :D

well, just to humor the question, we probably don't see any of the Code Geass kids changing uniforms since changing uniforms is more of an east asian thing. I don't know any uniformed schools in the west, but I daresay that they only have one set of uniforms because they're already a part of Britannia at the time, and summer/winter uniforms are more of a Japanese tradition. [that's my two cents worth on the uniform thing, anyway]

The whole series itself is kinda spring/summer PERPETUALLY in some weird, twisted sense. I didn't think Sunrise would go so far as "LOL WINTER SNOW~~~" when everyone is more focused on the plot.

summer/winter uniforms are more of a Japanese tradition.

They are?

'Cos I went to four different schools, and they all had different summer and winter uniforms.

That's why I disclaimed that I don't know any uniformed schools in the west, so I really wouldn't know. The previous statement was how I saw things.

[that's what you get for living in the tropics... The uniforms are always the same]

No harm meant. Cultural bias, I suppose - the fact people seem to find school uniforms an interesting foreign concept tends to confuse me.

We didn't have summer/winter uniforms at our school, but I live in California so that probably makes a difference.
