It's kinda brilliant because after he dies, he's going to have a hundred people arguing legal ownership of his soul. However, with his luck, the absolute worst person ever will be the one who wins the legal battle.

See, if he was really clever he could plan out and set up a John Constantine thing with it. And yet, for all his genius Lelouch is remarkably blase about the source of his powers and what the price for them will be, so I doubt he'd have that sort of forethought.

Even if he did plan things out ahead of time, he's still going to get screwed over by circumstances outside of his control. That's just the way things are for him.
