A Code Geass community! And a lively one, too. This is awesome to see indeed.

*ahem* Yes, this is a pesky introduction post. I just started watching the anime yesterday and was hooked left, right and center. Oh, it's not perfect by any means, but it's been so long since anything hits all the spots with just the correct punch. Though Death Note is currently considerably the smarter show, Code Geass is far more enjoyable. To me, that is. I've loved the director's previous Ryvius and I don't think Lelouch will disappoint. Hope there's a lot of mutual fanship to be found here. ♪~ (I tend to rant, sorry)

Though I don't have any creative output to offer to the altar at the moment (translating things always put my brain through a rut) I do have a few questions/guesswork around. Some of these are data gathering for fic, but some are just curiousity. If you don't mind?



- How exactly does Britannia's succession system work? My ears told me all Lelouch said in Episode 2 was "第十七後継承者", 17th successor, and the sub concurs. However, the sub and wikipedia (geass.co.jp has woefully little information) both says "second in line" (I didn't catch this line in the Japanese track, but I assume it's around his line about Empress Marianne, which I didn't completely understand). He's not 2nd prince, and even 3rd prince Clovis is his elder. So how does it work? Does the Emperor just assign whoever he wants on the line to the throne?
- Do you think it's a little too much coincidence that the only person Lelouch visibly softens to cannot be affected by his power? Nanaly's blind. I smell a plot coming about this.
- I'm sure most people also noticed this. In episode 1, when Lelouch's eye first went Geass, all the soldiers were freaking out over what was going on with it. But currently, when he uses the eye and it doesn't work, nobody seems to notice that his eye is red and has wings in the middle of them. Heck, Kallen was far closer to him in Ep. 3 than the soldiers in 1 ever were. What gives?
- Suzaku. A little early, but what do you think his ultimate role is? Best-friend-opposite-side ala Kira and Athrun, Love interest the White Knight, leader of a different philosophy and the True Unifier (by marrying Euphemia) or something else? While I figure the last one to be a given, I'm also betting on him becoming a foil. Lelouch's development doesn't seem to go into the Raito direction, the monster with no heart but a bunch a morals (and yes, I know about the 'reversed' Raito). Lelouch's problem seems to be the opposite : he has too much heart and too little morals to go along with it---and with the OP being optimistic rather than dark, I'm guessing Suzaku is someone to keep Lelouch from going *entirely* mad. They're now in the same class, after all. What's the point of that except throwing their character development curve together? (Of course, he's going to oppose Zero. But ultimately, he's not L, and I don't think he'd be there to kill Lelouch...)
- If Lamperouge is really Empress Marianne's maiden name, isn't it rather stupid for Lelouch and Nanaly to use it? I mean "Oh, this kid...same name as the dead prince, same surname as his mother. Wait a minute..." should occur to someone eventually. They should've came up with a more random surname. Unless that one is REALLY common, but since she's a noble...
- Lelouch will find it difficult not to be compared with Raito, so let's throw it in his face : Death Note or Eye of Geass, what's better? You can kill anyone with the Death Note, wherever, whenever and however. No one the wiser. Eye of Geass, you have to be standing there in front of that guy, can only be used once, but it covers just about everything and you can order a daily schedule.
- Does the manga translation want an assistant translator? >_>

Also the Lancelot is so totally impossibly overpowered. But I guess Lelouch can't have it too easy C-2 is utterly awesome. C-2/Lelouch FTW. ♥

3. i think it's coz of the terror of lelouch being a 'terrorist' and i mean, who wouldn't be freaked out when a nearly dead 'terrorist' starting acting evil and covers his eye o___o
5. i think it's more likely langerouge is a fake surname than being their mother's maiden name ^^;;
6. i've had this discussion with defade before. we concluded that it's best if they're used together. Light/Lelouch forever XDDDD

- Ah, so my ear was right. Can't blame them though. I understand that gg's got this huge backlog hanging around. Backlog is very bad for a translator's soul.
- I was under the impression that the soldiers knew full well that Lelouch was not a terrorist, but he saw too much. Therefore, why not 'make' him a terrorist and be done with it? And they didn't really freak out until he uncovered his eye and the wings popped out. But hmm...I guess it could just be because the hapless student just went and challenged them to shoot him and acted like an evil overlord. XD
- So Wikipedia is unreliable again! Bingo~!
- ....in that case, care to bet when A) Light would kill Lelouch because he's rather evil for Light's standards, I mean, he's a TERRORIST and B) Lelouch would Geass Light to give him the Death Note? XD
- Ah, I see. I haven't seen the scanlation before (I'm new and my internet sucks >_> ) but I'm happy to know it's in good hands. :D what does the 'shoo' mean, though?

I always thought 17th successor included the people who previously actually sat on the throne, and Lelouch would be the seventeeth if he gained it.

Suzaku I think will definitely break off from Britannia with Euphemia and join whatever group Lloyd is a part of, which I think the raven haired woman behind the blinds shown in the opening and episode four is a part of. I don't think Suzaku is the final antagonist, I think faction-wise this show will follow a Seed split. I do think that he will be preaching throughout the entire show to both Lelouche/Zero and to the military. He's also going to aim to defeat Zero while I feel Lelouche will set his plans to avoid battle with Suzaku/Lancelot/Monster Machines and hit the military directly. So far Lelouche's pawns seem too underpowered to achieve his goals, so it ill be interesting (especially if they avoid plot holes like that train full of mechs Lelouche knew about in ep. 2) to see his power base grow. Suzaku seems to be just a contrast to Lelouche so we can see two men disarm Britannia with their contrasting methods and try to achieve the same goal. Long live the Rebellion!/Counter Attack!

I have a question though. What do you think C.C.'s setence 'mitsketa! watashi no.....' finishes as in episode 1, now that you've seen her antics and personality (where she's amused most of the time at how Lelouche uses his powers). She reminds me so much of a certain mazoku.

Yup, I heard 17th alright, What was his brother? Euphoria is the 3rd I clearly heard. So the purple haired one is earlier… then what makes Nanaly?

Well since this anime group did created the gundam series… I guess Kira Athrun role is not that farfetched.

I have to admit that I am a bit of a snob about the Empire, rather like Clovis and Jeramiah...lol...so I don't consider Lulouch as highly born as the other Princes at all; he's behind the first two (proper) Princes and the two princesses as well, it seems, so maybe....possible Uncles and the children of Uncles we don't know about?

It's all speculation though; there are only 4 children above him (apparently,in age?) that we know about, and if the girls are included in the succession, that would strictly make him 5th...if they weren't, 3rd...17th does seem very far back.

But it confuses me that the oldest Prince (we know of) is referred to as the second Prince, and Clovis the Third (The Emperor is the First?)...

Confusing, isn't it!

And Euphemia, it strikes me, has to be older or a lot younger (younger than Nanaly) than Lelouch, or we have a conflict with the ages of the children and the mothers involved...unless the Emperor is a bigamist!

And what happened to Clovis and Cordelia's (and Euphemia's?) Mother?

But it may not be her maiden name. It could be completely made up. It's not clear.

It doesn't make sense with 後継承者, though. It's more like 'succession candidate'. And I don't know, it just makes more sense plotwise if Lelouch runs very little chance of getting the throne himself. Otherwise, he can just get it and then destroy Britannia while he's king.

I figure the woman behind the blinds is an old authority figure in Japan, but I'm not sure. Final antagonist is probably the as-yet-nameless princely looking guy in the OP. A Seed split sounds the most possible, yes, though at the same time I hope not...we've been there and done that. The director likes to be break cliches and all. Lelouch being underpowered is the interesting part of the series, though. How do you write a mech series where the main character isn't the kickass pilot but the guy who lined up the asses for the pilots to kick?

Truth be told? Not the slightest clue. Who is Lelouch to her? The person who can grant her request? Unlikely, she just saw him once. She knew him from before? Could be possible with that Ragnarok thing, but oh so badplot. And about the last line---I think there's a reason she's called a witch. XD (Though I'd be amused too if I see him Geassing a girl to carve crosses everyday. HOW THEATRIC, Lelouch. But then we know he likes theatrics)

Clovis is 3rd, and he's older. Euphemia is also 3rd princess, Cornelia is 2. Schneizel is 2nd, too. We don't know the rest. But assuming there's a balance among the number of princes and princesses and everyone has equal right to the throne based on age, Lelouch would be....the 9th prince or something. Which is funny, since he played chess with Clovis as a kid. XD

I do consider Lelouch rather far away from the inheritance. It just makes more sense plotwise. Otherwise, why didn't he just go "I AM PRINCE LELOUCH", kill his elder brother (it's easy with the Geass), take the throne and then demolish Britannia from within?

There're probably other children we don't know about, especially since it seems most of the competent ones are sent around to various areas. Euphemia strikes me as older...but then I think the Emperor could be a polygamist, though maybe not by choice...marriage is a good way to keep political alliances intact, after all. And to keep the factions from killing each other and altering the power balance, they'd have to be Empresses, too.

Then again, it's just weird if Clovis is 3rd and Lelouch, estimated 9th, were playing chess together. Unless they're all raised closely.

That's what makes the comparison fun. XD Light can't kill Lelouch with the Death Note outright because he uses a false surname, and what he can do with it is somewhat limited. But it's utterly safe to use. As a story device, I prefer the Eye of Geass---it's in situ, which means Lelouch has to be there and figure out how to get out of 'there'. It makes each use personal (he sees the deaths firsthand, unlike Raito. Seeing it does make it different) while the Note lends itself to a puzzle-solving story. Geass lends itself to a more dynamic one. More powerful? I don't know. XD

Yeah, that's why I think Lelouch wouldn't end up the same as Raito. Lelouch's selling point is that he's entirely human. He's passionate about things, he has people he cares about---though I think he doesn't care that much for regular Britannians he doesn't personally know. (You have to admit that actually killing the Britannians in Ep.4 would incite mass outrage + shock Suzaku. Neither is good for his goals of eventually changing how society works + convince Suzaku) Raito, though, initially just wanted a better world where everyone obeys laws and oppresses no one else. The God thing 'was' just his idea of how it'd work, and he got carried away with it. Lelouch is human and prone to human actions, Raito is like...a reasoning machine. I do think Lelouch will end up working in a very different way from Raito, though. Kira acts behind the scene and vies with L. Lelouch has to lead the rebellion---he has to take center stage sooner or later. And that will be very, very different. (That's the part I look forward to the most)

...And if we're going by age, I am assuming Cordelia and Euphemia would have to go as well...not to mention, of course, his Father. ^-^

It seems to me the Emperor made a poor judgement politically in marrying Marianne, since so many of his nobility (implied) didn't like her. And of course, her stepchildren (by an older? and deceased? Empress, their own Mother) didn't like her. But then you wouldn't be too pleased at their age to have your Mother (potentially) replaced and not just replaced, but replaced by someone of inferior breeding, and then producing more children...

Perhaps the Emperor thought he was above all their opinions. Apparently not though. ;)

I am quite interested in this family though, as so much about how the relationships work is undefined as yet, leaving lots of room for fun speculation. :D It will amuse me if Euphemia does turn out to be older than Suzaku (who is the same age as Lelouch - 17); that would be funny.

If I have to choose a power then, I choose Death Note; Geass gives you a sparkley eye, but Death Note comes with Ryuk attached! And he's awesome. ^-^

....It's interesting that Lelouch uses 'niisan' instead of 'ani-ue' or 'niisama', though. Is he just being insulting by using a term meant for commoners, or were they particularly close as children?

Yep, I do think that guy is the Schneizel (and likely, Lelouch's Prime Antagonist). He looks like Yuuto But it'd be pretty easy to kill ALL of them, you know, and make his father announce him as the heir before offing him off, too. XD

She could be a nouveau riche. A noble family that was originally a commoner, but was so financially powerful that it would be stupid not to marry? From the ED, it doesn't look like it's a marriage for love, or Lelouch wouldn't be running from dad in UTTER RAGE. And if he actually designated Lelouch as second from...whoever's first, probably Scheneizel, it's incredibly obvious that none of his older children will like it.

I think she'll be older. She does look slightly so, after all. XD And the family interests me, too, probably because it appears so utterly dysfunctional. XD And there's the interesting part of how dear old Lulu STILL identifies himself as a Britannian prince when it comes right down to it, despite his general hate and anger towards it all. You know it's something interesting.

Geass also comes with C.C.! ...but then again, she's less awesome than Ryuk, and she DOES kick you out of your bed.... (Personally---I adore Geass as a story device, but if I can choose for myself...the Note would be incredibly useful.)

Hmmmm.... that's some intresting questions you raise there...

The note or the Geass? Hmmmm... that's hard...with the note you could kill at such distances... but with the geass you control that person's mind completely...

The problem with both though is the potential to be misused...Perhaps wth the geass you could find the person with the note and make them give it to you...

Here's another intresting thing to think about... what if it was Light who got the geass and Lelouch picked up the note? how different would the outcomes be? (and how would Misa Misa feel about C.C. hanging on to her man?!? XD)

well technically, lelouch is USING the terrorists, and isn't a terrorist himself, but i guess b is a lot more likely. but i think lelouch using the geass power to ask for a guy's name, then light killing that guy would be the best:D

Though it's pretty given that Suzaku initially thinks 'the student' is a terrorist, all the soldiers saw was Lelouch coming out of the hole with C-2, just like all the 11's who took refuge there. There isn't anything to indicate he was a terrorist instead of a guy in the wrong place at the wrong time, and I don't think they actually think all the 11s there are terrorists. The soldiers just don't particularly care---the whole anime has hints of the whole US-Iraq thing, and I think the general sentiment is "The US also doesn't bloody care", too. But then this is what they call 'personal interpretation'. XD

That makes sense. Rather stupid of it to rely on a sub which is oh my god so wrong, but then again, that's wiki for you. Bleh. I need to get to Kinokuniya so I can pick up something reliable. -_-;

Yes, he is. But in Light's eyes, he wouldn't be so different, imo. And yes, that has occurred to me. If Lelouch and Light teams up, L wouldn't stand a chance. (Funny their names also started with the same letter) It'd be like "Hey, Lelouch, how about you Geass that guy into writing his name into this piece of paper here?" Afterwards, though, they'd probably argue and end up fighting each other. Their methodology may be similar, but Lelouch's and Light's ideals seems quite different.

Schneizel was mentioned in Episode 3 when Lelouch held Clovis at gunpoint. He and 2nd Princess Cornelia knows something about Lelouch's mother's death.

Nobody must have given these two the Spiderman Speech The Geass-user would have trouble finding the Note-user, though. But if you ever find him, he's pretty much yours. XD

Light getting the Geass would make his goals much, much tougher to get. He wants to scare the world into being good, but the Geass works much more indirectly than the Note. Maybe he'd have to do like Lelouch and get a superhero costume, out to punish the wrong! But of course, he will have absolutely no trouble dealing with L.

...I wonder if the Geass can order a person to do what they don't know about , or using complex orders?? Like ordering a street thug to hunt down and kill another street thug AND leave a measage like "JUSTICE" around or something.

Lelouch getting the Note would make his goal so easy to get there'd be no story. XD It'd be ridiculously easy for him to get the throne, of course, and kill anyone who opposes him while he's on it. And if he prefers rebellion---well, he can just plan a faux battle, then DN'd the general while people are fighting to cause chaos. Poof. Chessmaster grand-slam. His point is not to build a new morality like Light's, which is harder, but to raze down and build a new structure.

(MisaMisa would be so not happy about C.C., dude. And I can't imagine Light being happy with her, either. His ego is through the roof compared to Lelouch, and he's already not too happy himself. I imagine Lelouch would hit it off with Ryuk, though)

nope, i'm sorry to say ^^;; the suzaku manga is in beans ace or something, and the lelouch manga is in asuka. and i'm not really that bothered to buy each issue of asuka since i have newtype + animedia + animage every month as well, so the only source of scans we have are chinese scanlations ^^;; of course if someone starts to buy asuka/beans ace every month then we'll have scans XDD

Actually, b would be a lot more likely since Lelouch probably won't be giving his real name to anyone.XD;; And then there's this spelling thingy...his fake last name is the hardest thing to spell. And you get excepted from death by Death Note(man that sounds so wrong) if the owner accidentally misspells your name 4 times?

True. XD There's a chance Light could figure it out eventually or pull off another creative use of shinigami, but if Lulu gets wind of it, there'll be one less Yagami in the world. XD (It's also actually possible that he'd Geass him once he figures out "Hey...that Note is a pretty nifty tool for revolution..."
