After watching Code Geass, my official verdict is that is rules. Especially episodes 20-24. Being quite the fan of alternate history and westerns that I am, an idea for a fanfic popped into my head and it won't leave.

How does this sound? Rebellion: 1870, an alternate universe of Code Geass set, not after the conquest of Japan by Britannia, but after the defeat of the Confederacy in an alternate history version of the War between the States fought with steam powered war machines.

In the year of our lord 1862, the Confederate States of America seceded from the Union. Declaring it self an independent nation. The North swiftly retaliated; dispatching the Knightmare frames, steam powered war machines the likes of which the world had never seen, to crush the upstart Confederate government.
By 1865, the war was over. The Confederate States had surrendered. However, in the wake of Lincoln’s assassination, Vice President Vi Britannia was sworn in as acting commander in chief. His first act in office was to sign the Executive order that became known as the Great Reconstruction.
The States were stripped of their identities, their traditions, even their names and lumped together into 12 district zones. No elections have been held in seven years, the President packs all government offices with handpicked members of his own family.
In the Old South, now known as District 11, a yankee boy caught in the bloodshed swore that he would destroy the Union once and for all.

I figured I would bring up this idea to other members of the fandom before putting too much down on paper. Any feedback would be appreciated.

Okay. Don't take this to be criticism, because it's not. Really, what you have is a pretty good foundation. It's just that...

I keep getting the feeling that if you just rework the ideas a bit so you erase all references to Code Geass, what you might get is a story that could stand on its own (i.e., an original creation). I'm not saying that this will turn out to be a bad fanfic; I just feel that if you pour some more work into what you already have, you might get a pretty good original story. Of course, this might require some heavy thinking, especially if all you're planning to do is retell the Code Geass story in 19th-century America, so your mileage might vary. >_<

The idea's pretty good. I am actually researching on the Civil War for my summer assignment, lol.

ah well, but i can't imagine why Lelouch would side with the south and fight for slavery. He's all about people living on their own freely and not depending on others. Since he had some bad childhood experience with depending on his father and the Britannia empire.

Since it's been confirmed that C.C.'s been everywhere including America, won't it be better to make this a fic with historical characters, but based on the Code Geass world, if what you want is play with the Civil War themes? Your idea is sound, though, and I like the whole centralized and decentralized government thing....but :

There's also the problem silentorphan stated above. I myself have several thematic AUs floating around in my head, but whether they're simply re-creating the Code Geass situation in another continuity or integrating meaningful themes is another matter. Your Lulu would also need a vastly different Background Angst, if he's focused enough on revenge to fight for the Side That Has Slavery, state rights or no. Lelouch hates violation of human rights Except When Necessary (he thinks), but he doesn't seem to care that much for political ideals in actuality.
