XD I can honestly say I don't know how I became a BNF for the YGO fandom, only that all my friends insist that I am one (much to my ire). It might be because I make icons and have an odd sense of humor, but I can't be sure...

And it is an interesting phenomenon. I'm sad that the idea comes with a "bitchy" or "elitist" stigmata (since I don't like to think I fill either of those descriptions), but the popularity does have it's benefits.

I think some of the things required for becoming BNF are being into the fandom at the right time (early enough, though not before anyone else has heard of it) and being good & productive in something (fanart, fanfiction, icons, witty commentary)... However, I am sure there are other factors that come into the play as well.

Ah, I don't think it comes with "bitchy" association, though "elitist" is probably true. Of course, you get accused of being elitists if you say you prefer unedited sub to the edited dub, so not like that's a hard reputation to earn. XP;;
