raigekijin on her journal for that meme thing. Prompt was "Memorial".
Each year, Cornelia visits her idol's grave. Each year, she stands (hunched rather than ramrod straight, collapsible rather than immovable, crumpled rather than proud) in front of the beautifully carved headstone. Each year, her fingers trace over the poetic words engraved beneath her name and date of death. She does not read them; her lips move of their own accord. She has been here so many times, read this epitaph so many times that she can recite them by memory.
Each year, Guilford stands (as her knight) far enough away that he can pretend he doesn't see the tears glistening as they roll down her cheeks.
Each year, she dries her eyes on a handkerchief, and pretends that everything is fine, that she is fine, and they go back to duty. She becomes, then, that perfect ice princess who incites respect in her subordinates and fear in her foes. She and Guilford walk to the palace together to greet her father with the utmost respect, and they say nothing.
But this year she is gone; this year, Cornelia is nowhere to be found. There's an undug grave for her -- if she does not return, the Emperor declares, within a certain amount of time, she will be proclaimed dead. -- and an empty knightmare that remains, collecting dust, in Area 11.
This year, she cannot go, and so Guilford goes in her place, bringing flowers instead of memories.
"Forgive me," he says, to the woman he never knew (and traces the words on the headstone; he has to read them, unlike his princess). "But this is the best I could do."
He thinks she'd understand.

benizakura on the meme we're doing for each other on our shared writing community, [Bad username or site: shinigamikendra. @ livejournal.com] Prompt was "Explosions."
Cecile sits and watches the news alone.
Lloyd has never had much interest in current events; in fact, he hasn't had any interest in anything aside from science and progress for years. Lloyd's passion is innovation and discovery, and Cecile can understand. But even she likes to know what's going on, and she sometimes (mistakenly) comments upon events in the news while they work.
"A mine blew up in China today," she might say, biting down on one of her newest experimental treats. "Strange, how very little of the Sakuradite was involved in the explosion." She pauses, glancing up at Lloyd, whose attention is finally on her. He has a frown on his face, and such an expression -- regarding the news, no less -- is surprising. "I wonder if it's the Chinese Federation's way of warning us?"
"Don't be ridiculous," is Lloyd's snapped retort, as he returns to his papers, scribbling furiously. "They're not intelligent enough to be able to get the Sakuradite out of the mine. That's more like..." he trails off. His pencil snaps in his hands.
"...The Black Knights?" Cecile starts to ask, but Lloyd just shoves a jam-filled riceball in her face.
"Eat. Work. Don't talk." His tone is harsh and Cecile knows better than to argue, turning back to her notes and licking filling off her fingers.
The broken pencil lies on Lloyd's desk as his brain -- racing at the speed of something only slightly slower than light -- brings up a portrait of someone he hasn't seen in ages, with lips curled into a smirk, slim fingers holding a pipe.
Laksharta Chawla, aiding Zero -- it seems, Lloyd thinks, to place more pressure on his own designs and ideas. But Lloyd, an Earl, a brilliant man, will not be bested by this Indian tart of an inventor, and taking one end of the broken pencil, he starts scrawling plans for a way to outdo her once again.
