I was in Gaia, and I made an avatar cosplay of Cornelia. Then this asshat member claims that her name is "Vi Britannia" and not "Li Britannia", which I typed her name as. Now, I've always read her name as "Li Britannia" and Euphie's the same. Now, though I believe to be correct, I don't want to doubt anymore on the names of the (known) Royal Family members:

1. Emperor Charles Di Britannia
2. Empress Marianne Vi Britannia
3. Schneizel El Britannia
4. Clovis La Britania
5. Cornelia Li Britannia
6. Euphemia Li Britannia
7. Lelouch Vi Britannia
8. Nunnally Vi Britannia

I don't know Odysseus' complete name.
On a more random note, I tend to type Brittania and not Britannia and then change it. Anyone else does that? Or is it just a language rule I missed along the way?? XD

Cornelia and Euphemia are both "li." (I'm looking at my Newtype magazine that has a list of all the female characters.) I thought Charles' was "zi," but I think that's just due to different romanizations of the character, haha.

I think most people type Britannia XD

I believe you're right in that case, most definitely~

Uhm...I always do that when typing Britannia, but then I feel as if my old Latin teacher is staring down my neck and I know it's wrong. ^-^""

I can empathize with you there -_- My Latin teacher had this jar on her desk that said "Ashes of Problem Students" O_O

According to the Japanese Wiki, you're right~

Typing "Britannia" comes more naturally to me. I think it was the Latin name for England or something? *fails at world history*
Date/Time: 2008-05-21 02:17 (UTC)Posted by: [identity profile] braver.livejournal.com
It's definitely "Li" for Corny. :D (And auto-spell check says it's Britannia whenever I type Brittania *nod*)

Also, I'm the asshole on Gaia who took the name "Lelouch Vi Britannia" for a mule account. Oh, the mail I get asking for me to give up that name...XD

THAT WAS YOU?!

XD Anyways, score! Awesome name snag! (I wanted to do a Lelouch mule, but I think I like my C!Syaoran mule, lovingly dubbed "Cloney-kun", too much to ever abandon him...even if CLAMP will. D:)

On the Odysseus note, his full name hasn't been announced yet. I'm looking at my Mar. '08 issue of Newtype and on his profile it simply says Odysseus and that he's the first prince. Nothing else ):

2. Empress Marianne Vi Britannia

Empress? I was under the assumption that she was considered a "Princess" and not truly an Empress? Or have I got it wrong?

Anyway, I'm really curious about the reasons behind the different "Vi" or "Li" prefixes. In French, if one were to say something of a similar sort like "Charles Di Britannia" it would be "Charles De Britannia". Charles of Britannia. Now, my Italian is very, very rough (read as: practically non-existant, but I have knowledge of other Romance languages), but I'd think that "Di" might be the Italian version of "De." If it is, then Charles Di Britannia would make sense, however it doesn't explain the other prefixes.

One wild piece of speculation is that they have something to do with Roman numerals. Perhaps Charles is the 500th or 501st (D + i(I)?) Charles of Britannia? Likewise, Lelouch could be the 6th (V + i(I)?) Lelouch? I have nothing really to back this up, and the middle 'names' could just be a way to represent family ties.

Or, simply, it could be an Engrish attempt at creating royal sounding names?

She was called Empress/Queen in season one, if I recall correctly.

Foreign language is used a lot in Geass.
The first Emperor of Britannia has the name Ricardo van Britannia. Which, if I use the miniscule Dutch skills I have, means "Ricardo of Britannia."

Nonette Enneagram's name has the word "nine" in it.
"Ennea" is Greek for nine. (the one benefit of having a friend who spoke Greek)

Somehow, I doubt this is coincidental Engrish, considering that two of the more noteworthy Emperors in Geass have a "(blank) of Britannia" name and that Nonette actually has the word "nine" in her name.

I do recall someone as being "la Britannia." I'm not sure who, but... I do remember someone with the "la" title.

English Wiki tells me it's Odysseus U Britannia who phails in comparison to Schneizel.

And, in Spanish and Italian and probably some other European languages, "la" is female. So why is it used on Clovis? Maybe when he was born they mistook him for a girl?

Whoever said that her last name is "vi Britannia" has obviously never watched the series through. Euphie says "I, Euphemia li Britannia..." more than enough times in the first season. And if you use your common sense, it's quite reasonable that Cornelia would have the same last name as her little sister.

I used to spell it "Brittania" because that was what I was most familiar with (and names that ambigious can get weird spellings). Until those headlines with the decent English and "official" spellings of the characters popped up and I'm like, "Oh, it's Britannia!"

DDDDD: WHY CAN'T LJ GIVE THE EDIT FUNCTION TO FREE USERS AS WELL?

Also, can you send me a link to that Gaia page? I'd love to see the Cornelia cosplay.

I made a C.C. mule for all my roleplays...though the sad thing is that I spend more time on [CC] than on my original account xDDD

it's slightly out of the topic, but i'm wondering what the other 75+ heirs are doing with their lives.

nunnally mentioned that she was the 87th in line, right?

the emperor sure kept himself busy

The Sound Episode "Imperial Siblings" gives the names Emile and Oscar, presumably also princes because they were mentioned when Schneizel and Cornelia speculate about the next Governor General for Area 11 (who later ended up being Clovis).

I think Sunrise (mis)spelled it Brittania sometimes too. Even in the last episode when they show Nunnally's name, if I'm not mistaken.
