I cannot recall the source of information, but it was spoken about amongst the community for some time... at least that's where I believed I got the information from.
Basically, as CLAMP served as the designers of the characters (appearance-wise.. I don't know how much power they have to extend influence), some of the members (or was it the whole group?) liked Clovis's character quite a lot. They were astounded (and sad) to see Clovis die so early in the series.
