Well, Im not trolling. Shirley was just plain useless and dragged the whole plot of Lelouch destroying britannia into a shitstorm of 15 episodes. Rolo saved Lelouch from death.
So yeah, as a guy who watches the show to actually see lelouch OF THE REBELLION, Rolo was 10 time more a brilliant character than shirley.
Ofc, if there never had been a R2 it would've been better, but hence Sunrise decided to go around the bawing shit plotwist, all I can do is support that Rolo's dead is probably the most touching one of the anime.
Shirley didn't participate in the rebellion plot much because she's a relatively normal girl. Regardless, she was one of the most realistic female characters in the series, and she also saved Lelouch at one point by shooting Viletta. She had good intentions and never did anything wrong. That's why I liked her.
While Rolo's characterization was interesting, I never liked him and saw him as having few redeeming qualities other than undying loyalty (though it was only directed towards one person), and am thus not troubled in the slightest by his death. I found Shirley to be likeable and believable and as such, I thought her death was a real shame.
I do agree that R2 is getting a bit superfluous, though.

And really, as if Rolo wasn't enough of a fanservice character for the female audience.
