does anyone know or wonder where he got it? does it have some special meaning or something?

or am I just over-analyzing things...


*edit*...I think I've made everyone dispute against one another just coz I was curious...O.o

but all of your answers are feasible and well, all I can add now is that with the series is still after all, on-going and more info will be coming up soon (from the official site, other sites, etc) which would then finally lead to answer (I just wonder how long that will take) and hopefully no one here will be going "I told you so" like some five-year-old... >_>

Lamperouge was his mother's maiden name. He and Nanaly reverted to it after the Britannian invasion to fake their deaths in the ensuing battles. One thing that is interesting to note, though, is that 'Lelouch Lamperouge' is most likely French in origin...and that 'Lelouch' sounds like a contraction of 'Le Louche', which means 'the suspicious one'. 'Lamperouge' means 'Red Lamp'.

"La Louche" would mean "The Ladle".

But "Le Louche", based on the correct spelling, is French for "The Suspicious One"...and I guess it's quite fitting knowing his character.

I wonder if there's any significance to his last name, then. The only significant thing I've managed to find about red lamps is that Arthur Conan Doyle wrote a book called Round the Red Lamp, and that a red lamp was a sign of a doctor.

The weird thing about "red lamp" is that in ancient Greek spellcasting, red lamps were considered unfit for use in spells and oftentimes recipes would specify to use any color but red. I wonder if that's actually relevant to Lelouch or just a fluke? I don't know why they were avoided so entirely, unfortunately...

Wiki says it's his mother's maiden name, but I don't think Lulu is stupid enough to use that name...plus wiki messed up quite a few other things too, so I can't count on that.

Lelouch's supposed to be dead and it'd be a safe guess to think that the Ashfords would have helped spread the word around, as payback for his late mother's support and protection.

Besides, it might have been a few months/years before the new government would have its databases up and running, so his decision to use his mother's maiden name might not have been done right after the invasion. By then, not only would the Emperor have deemed his two (disowned and useless after the invasion) children wasted and of no longer use and put an end to the search. Since he couldn't be used as a political tool anymore - or so it seemed - there was no reason to mobilize soldiers to look for them. As such, Lelouch could have easily adopted 'Lamperouge' right then and the name would have eluded the search efforts, as people are now busy with other things - like spoiling the shreds of a conquered land.

Yeah, I don't think Lampourge is his mother's maiden name. His mother was an Ashford- he's certainly related to Millay somehow. That's why the Ashford family took him and Nanaly in.

Lelouch is NOT related to the Ashfords. They had been supporters of Lelouch's mother, Empress Marianne and were in turn protected and ennobled. But when she was assassinated, they lost everything, hence why Millay's considering an omiai (marriage interview) to save the Ashford's financial predicament and why Lelouch chose to ask that specific family for help, and not anyone else.

Are you sure? I could have sworn the anime mentioned that Lelouch's mother was an Ashford. But then after his mother's death the Ashford family was in trouble, and that's why Millay's considering an omiai.

Yeah, I'm certain about it. There was a debate about it a while ago (on translation issues) and the bottom was that the Ashfords were Marianne's supporters, not her relatives, and that everything they had gained from the Empress, had been taken away from them after her death.
