Yeah seriously. They practically screwed his character, and whatever he was meant to do, over by having him join Lelouch...

Seeing as he was supposed to die about 40 episodes ago, I'd say he got a pretty fair deal along with the snazzy threads.

But yeah, the Geass canceller was merely to pick up the Shirley thread. Shame they then decided to cut it right after.
