OK, since we've all been wondering... (and some of us hoping....)

Personally, I think Lelouch is dead. I believe his sacrifice means so much more that way and all that, but the more I think about it, the more I think that it's impossible for him to be alive. There's quite a bit of speculation in the end as to whether or not Lelouch gained Charles' Code and immortality and survived. If that were true, wouldn't he have lost his Geass?

I was under the impression that those who obtained a Code lost the Geass in exchange. It happened to CC, and after gaining VV's code, Charles didn't use his Geass again. Obviously, Lelouch uses his multiple times and it still works. Also, those with a Code are immune to Geass, aren't they? Lelouch could never affect CC, and his attempt to kill Charles didn't work. But Lulu was definitely still affected by Rolo's. I don't think it's possible that he could have a Code.

Agreed. I think Lelouch is dead. I think it's a more... fitting end.

Reminds me of the Serenity movie, when Mal and the Operative are talking.

Capt. Malcolm Reynolds: So me and mine gotta lay down and die... so you can live in your better world?
The Operative: I'm not going to live there. There's no place for me there... any more than there is for you. Malcolm... I'm a monster. What I do is evil. I have no illusions about it, but it must be done.

if Lelouch survived... for me, it would spoil everything. too mushy, too much of a cliche. And besides, it would be too good for Suzaku. :d
The ending was sad, but very fitting.

It can be implied from some scenes (and again, this is left intentionally vague) that the code transfer doesn't go through until the recipient dies- CC was 'killed' when she got her code, remember. And of course off this we can argue whether or not Charles was just fucking with Lulu or if he was actually hit by the die geass.

Lelouch's death is a very fitting end to the series. As much as I love him, f he were alive, it would cimply be a cop out.
If he lives, then what was the point? The meaning is gone.

Lelouch said himself that the one who walks within the road of Ashura, or destruction, should be ready to sacrifice himself.

If he were alive, what the heck with the sake of the plot? It would be a crack, I think. This way it's better.

...And C.C. is still an immortal, huh?

Agree with the hole "lulu dead" thing, but the Rolo geass cannot be used as proof. People think he got the code in his second encounter with Emperor-chan, not the first. Besides, Charles obviously has the code by the end of the first encounter because he survived the destruction of the sword of akasha.

I personally believe Lelouch to be alive. There is a lot of evidence supporting it. And if you truly think about it, being alive isn't much of an award at all. Actually, I think a death would be easier than surviving. By surviving he is banishing himself from the life he wanted, sacrificing himself for eternity. He will never be able to shoot fireworks with everyone again. I find this to be more torturous than to simply die and never deal with anything again.

Also, Lelouch commands the Gods, and I believe they grant him with the Code when Charles and Marianne bites the dust.

Well apparently magazine like Newtype and Animedia sorta saying like he's dead.

"Lelouch has now an eternal sleep, but he lives in C.C's heart"

Now I don't know what that line means. Sound like he's really dead. And he's in the Code Geass list of dead characters. *shrugs*. I would want him alive not because is "cheap". Because he can't live a normal live anyways. He's sorta "dead" but not dead if he was immortal. I'm biased coz I feel that C.C has no closure. And her cycle of love, hatred and loneliness will come back again... give her another 200 years if she was really alone? The world won't remain peaceful for long you know. What about the other Britannian princes, rebels?

Based on that line by the magazine. It's like his soul went into her body or something @_@

I agree, Lelouch is dead.

However, the reasons you listed could be disproved. First off, there's been a lot of speculation that in Lelouch's last encounter with his father (after Rolo's dead) he was able to obtain Charles's Code and also keep his own Geass (because it was CC that gave him the Geass, not Charles), hence the title of Code Geass.

However, I don't think he has it because there appeared to be a necessary ritual in order to pass on the Code. If just touching skin was enough after the Geass is in both eyes, CC would have given hers to Mao ages ago.

Also, I will list the two fail-safe Sunrise Death Symptoms (in this show at least): Shadows under the eyes and an epic last scene. Lelouch got both of those.

Also-also, CC and Suzaku and Lelouch all gave the impression that he was dying in that last scene. Lelouch DID promise to make CC smile in... was it episode 24? Anyway. He did promise that, but personally I thought that just meant that when it was all over she could get Suzaku to kill her/take her Code, which is why Suzaku would live forever, etc etc etc I'm getting offtopic.

Last, but not least, Nunally was lying across his chest crying. She was holding his hand when he died. I think she'd have noticed if he was actually not dead. And what could have happened to his body? They probably burned it or dismembered it or something. There's no way that he could have just walked away to happiness with CC after everyone disappeared... I suppose he could drag himself from the grave/reassemble after being burned to ashes, if he was really immortal, but again --- Nunally would have noticed if he was still alive.

So yeah. *done*

I do not think that Lelouch is dead but I think that he fully intended to die and is not having a happy life. Also, I think getting a Code cancels the geass because it involves killing the source of the geass. If you take a Code from somebody who didn't give you your original geass I doubt that happens. Like everything else about Code transfer, it's not clear.

At first i thought Lelouch was dead, but after the 234234 posts i read about WHY Lelouch is alive it made me only 80% certain he's dead now. I mainly think that he's dead, but i'm still open to the theories of why he's alive.

Last week i posted a poll asking people what they believed Lulu's fate was, and 36.2% believed he was truly dead and 42.5% thought he was still alive. The rest were just people that are undecided :P I was surprised to know the majority of people believed for him to be alive still.

I think its possible that Lelouch is alive. He and C.C. have a contract, and Lelouch hasn't held up his end yet. Why would they stress the idea of a contract if it wasn't going to be upheld? Also, I think that Lelouch having eternal life would be the most fitting "punishment" for all the things that he's done. I think that if he WAS alive, then he would have taken on C.C.'s code as part of the contract, therefore allowing her to die (either of old age or injury).

I doubt he is alive ( I wish he was!), but I can see how Sunrise could make it plausible.

Lulu surviving because of the unfulfilled contract with C.C. would be pretty cheesy and not very credible. If he were to live forever, he would have a happily ever after with C.C. - so there's no way. And about the punishment, maybe Geass users have some special afterlife, like in Death Note the notebook users? Who knows?

Also, I will list the two fail-safe Sunrise Death Symptoms (in this show at least): Shadows under the eyes and an epic last scene. Lelouch got both of those.
Hell yes. You got it perfect.

doesn't C.C. need die in order to transfer her immortality to Lulu?? and she was fully alive at the end of the show.

but yeah, the ending was ambiguous after people yelled at me for thinking Lulu was dead...

but I stand by my fitting ending with death opinion.

No matter how tragic his death was...IT'S ALL WORTH IT. Besides, if his really alive, then isn't it that what he all planned from the start and his death to "kill the hate of the world" be futile?...

His death is written in the anime history as EPIC.
