OK, since we've all been wondering... (and some of us hoping....)
Personally, I think Lelouch is dead. I believe his sacrifice means so much more that way and all that, but the more I think about it, the more I think that it's impossible for him to be alive. There's quite a bit of speculation in the end as to whether or not Lelouch gained Charles' Code and immortality and survived. If that were true, wouldn't he have lost his Geass?
I was under the impression that those who obtained a Code lost the Geass in exchange. It happened to CC, and after gaining VV's code, Charles didn't use his Geass again. Obviously, Lelouch uses his multiple times and it still works. Also, those with a Code are immune to Geass, aren't they? Lelouch could never affect CC, and his attempt to kill Charles didn't work. But Lulu was definitely still affected by Rolo's. I don't think it's possible that he could have a Code.

Reminds me of the Serenity movie, when Mal and the Operative are talking.
Capt. Malcolm Reynolds: So me and mine gotta lay down and die... so you can live in your better world?
The Operative: I'm not going to live there. There's no place for me there... any more than there is for you. Malcolm... I'm a monster. What I do is evil. I have no illusions about it, but it must be done.

The ending was sad, but very fitting.

Despite how it went, Geassing charles to die was such a big event that i feel they wouldnt have left out the neuron scramble if it had actually worked.

If he lives, then what was the point? The meaning is gone.

If he were alive, what the heck with the sake of the plot? It would be a crack, I think. This way it's better.
...And C.C. is still an immortal, huh?

Also, Lelouch commands the Gods, and I believe they grant him with the Code when Charles and Marianne bites the dust.

"Lelouch has now an eternal sleep, but he lives in C.C's heart"
Now I don't know what that line means. Sound like he's really dead. And he's in the Code Geass list of dead characters. *shrugs*. I would want him alive not because is "cheap". Because he can't live a normal live anyways. He's sorta "dead" but not dead if he was immortal. I'm biased coz I feel that C.C has no closure. And her cycle of love, hatred and loneliness will come back again... give her another 200 years if she was really alone? The world won't remain peaceful for long you know. What about the other Britannian princes, rebels?
Based on that line by the magazine. It's like his soul went into her body or something @_@

Anyways new post. According to the director Taniguchi. He said "it's up to your imaginations". That line is from the new mag interview. Hope someone make a proper translations of those.
SO CONFIRMED THE ENDING IS AMBIGUOUS.

I personally think he's alive and no which puzzles me is why his death will be "cheapen" if he is immortal. I really really dislike that line. It's not like he can live like he used to be. And Lelouch has always been a person who wants results, to use the ends of justify the means. He wants to create a peaceful world for Nunnally. His death is not only for himself but for the ones he loved and cared. And some people don't want him to live just because I WANT him to live. Because to me peace will not last long, he will create a peaceful world for a moment. But what about rebels, other britiannian princes? There is no such thing as eternal peace.
But I do agree that if he's dead, THEN he's dead there is nothing to do about it. The most important thing is He wanted to create peaceful world's that is all. In the end it's not about him. It's about his wish.

However, the reasons you listed could be disproved. First off, there's been a lot of speculation that in Lelouch's last encounter with his father (after Rolo's dead) he was able to obtain Charles's Code and also keep his own Geass (because it was CC that gave him the Geass, not Charles), hence the title of Code Geass.
However, I don't think he has it because there appeared to be a necessary ritual in order to pass on the Code. If just touching skin was enough after the Geass is in both eyes, CC would have given hers to Mao ages ago.
Also, I will list the two fail-safe Sunrise Death Symptoms (in this show at least): Shadows under the eyes and an epic last scene. Lelouch got both of those.
Also-also, CC and Suzaku and Lelouch all gave the impression that he was dying in that last scene. Lelouch DID promise to make CC smile in... was it episode 24? Anyway. He did promise that, but personally I thought that just meant that when it was all over she could get Suzaku to kill her/take her Code, which is why Suzaku would live forever, etc etc etc I'm getting offtopic.
Last, but not least, Nunally was lying across his chest crying. She was holding his hand when he died. I think she'd have noticed if he was actually not dead. And what could have happened to his body? They probably burned it or dismembered it or something. There's no way that he could have just walked away to happiness with CC after everyone disappeared... I suppose he could drag himself from the grave/reassemble after being burned to ashes, if he was really immortal, but again --- Nunally would have noticed if he was still alive.
So yeah. *done*

THANK YOU. And the comment about Nunnally holding his hand. Remember how she acted like a lie detector with Miss Romeyer? She obviously could not have missed the fact that he had no pulse.
=3= I love reading other people's proof that Lulu is dead, since they make more sense than my incoherent rambling. I've been trying to convince someone that Lelouch is dead, but he's being stupid to believe that he lives. -__- He just wants more episodes, but can't be bothered watching any picture dramas or listening to sound episodes.

and i don't just say that because i want him to be alive, i wouldn't have minded if they actually confirmed him to be absolutely positively dead.. but my head just tells me that he is alive.

Last week i posted a poll asking people what they believed Lulu's fate was, and 36.2% believed he was truly dead and 42.5% thought he was still alive. The rest were just people that are undecided :P I was surprised to know the majority of people believed for him to be alive still.

I doubt he is alive ( I wish he was!), but I can see how Sunrise could make it plausible.

Hell yes. You got it perfect.

but yeah, the ending was ambiguous after people yelled at me for thinking Lulu was dead...
but I stand by my fitting ending with death opinion.

His death is written in the anime history as EPIC.
