Okay, so, I said I'd do this when the series ended, so I did it!

Title: Code Geass: Suzaku of Japan. (Chapter 1)
Raiting: PG-13, at the most.
Pairings: Lelouch/CC, Suza/Euphie, and (implied) Suzalulu
Summary: So, what would have happened if Suzaku got the geass instead of Lelouch at the end of Stage 1? MOAR ANGST is what!

And angst is always good, right?

Also: Since I am in love with the boku/ore thing Suzaku has going on, I've decided to honor that in the fic. Whenever you see I italicized and not in an already italicized sentence coming from Suzaku, it means he's switched to ore!mode.

And now, to the fic:

“Le—Lelouch?!”

Suzaku could hardly believe it. No…it had to be true. But even so—after all this time—seven years—

It didn’t matter that a second ago he had thought he had been arresting a terrorist. Without another doubt in his mind, Suzaku reached up to remove his helmet. A smile on his face, he said, “Lelouch, it’s me…Suzaku.”

Violet eyes opened wide. “Su—Suzaku?” It was a moment before Lelouch’s expression grew darker. “You…you joined the Britannian military?”

“Well—what about you?” Suzaku demanded, unsure why his old friend’s accusations annoyed him. “Why are you a terrorist?”

“I told you, I’m not—!”

At that instant, a white flash broke between them. Suzaku acted without second thought; shoving his gas mask onto Lelouch and pushing him to the ground, preparing for the onslaught of the deadly poison gas.

It didn’t matter, as long as Lelouch stayed alive. He was prepared to die; he always was.
And then the capsule opened.

Both of them stared wide eyed, as a girl—a green haired, bound girl—emerged from the capsule.
“It’s…it’s not poison gas?”

After a moment of staring, both of them rushed forward to help the girl who seemed to be unconscious. Lelouch held her as both began to remove her bonds, but still—what in the world?

“Tell me Suzaku, is this girl poison gas?” his friend asked dryly.

“Well, in briefing, they said—”

Both were cut short as bright lights flicked on. Both turned in horror—it was the Britannian military.

“Eleven!” the captain shouted, gun leveled at Suzaku, “How dare you! Not even a full blooded Britannian is allowed to touch that!”

As Suzaku ran up to explain, Lelouch’s eyes narrowed—it didn’t matter that right now he had pistols at all sides pointed at him from the Britannian military none the less—the Suzaku he had known would have never let an insult like that lie.

Even in those few minutes, he had noticed a change, but…Suzaku

“However, I will give you another chance,” The captain spoke as Lelouch tuned back in. “Here,” He held out a pistol to Suzaku. “Private Kururugi, use this to kill the terrorist.”

Both Suzaku and Lelouch froze up for a moment at that.

“He’s not a terrorist!” Suzaku spoke at once. “He’s just a civilian, who got caught up in this! There’s no—”

“You dare question your orders, you Honorary Britannain?! You swore allegiance—”

Lelouch’s teeth clenched. Suzaku!

“But—I cannot kill him.” Never had Suzaku been more sure in that moment. Turning back to Lelouch, who still looked wide-eyed in surprise, he said, “I will not harm a civilian.”

The captain glared. “Very well then.” He leveled the pistol at Suzaku. “Die.”

Suzaku’s eyes closed, bracing for the impact, though selfishly, deep down below, he couldn’t help but feel relief at last—Finally

And then a loud explosion broke into the room.

What happened in those few seconds, Suzaku didn’t really know. All he could remember is using the diversion to scramble for Lelouch, hoping that he could at least save one more life before he paid for his insubordination with his own. Smoke was everywhere—shouts and gunshots flew all around—but when he finally made it into an open area, Lelouch was nowhere to be found. All Suzaku had was the mysterious girl in his arms, who had now regained consciousness.

“Lelouch?” Suzaku asked, not daring to call any louder for him. They had gotten separated, and he hoped Lelouch had it in him to get out of there, fast—Heart falling in his chest, he thought of what might happen to Lelouch if the military caught him—

Just that image and the sickening guilt in his heart for possibly allowing his friend to die was enough to make the tight control he had all over his life to snap. “What…what is this?” Suzaku demanded, practically dropping the girl. “Everything was…Everything was fine before we found you! If you hadn’t appeared then…then…I could have saved Lelouch!”

The girl said nothing, but her eyes seemed to take a small surprise at his words. He had been yelling at her in Japanese—the language he had thrown away, that only came back to him in times like this, perhaps she didn’t understand him. And perhaps he didn’t want her to.

But…there was only one thing to do now. Try and find Lelouch. That was all he could do. Clenching his teeth, he grabbed the girl by her arm. “Come on,” he snarled at her in English, hoping she could understand that, at the very least.

Walking around the old subway tunnels, trying to find the exit, several things mulled across Suzaku’s mind. Britannia…

In truth, Suzaku had first hated this country—the robbers and murderers that had stolen his Japan away. And though he knew they treated the Japanese—what were his people—wrongly, there was nothing he could do. Nothing, except accept it, for now.

But Suzaku had greater ambitions. He wanted to die—he wanted to die saving everyone that he possibly could. Suzaku wanted to do it, somehow—become the white knight in shining armor that would bring hope to the Japanese. Perhaps becoming such a symbol to them would help bring Japan and Britannia closer together—close enough that Japan might be able to become an active part of Britannia, upholding their old traditions but still serving the empire, instead of the puppet state it was now.

Yes…Suzaku thought perhaps, he could do it. He would try. If he could change Britannia from the inside—change it for the better—then everything would be better for Japan.

And if that did not work, there was always the other alternative…though it seemed impossible now. He had heard, in his time in the military about something called the “Knight of One”—and whoever became this powerful knight was given a territory of Britannia to run. If change did not work—then Suzaku wished for that, to somehow, against all odds, become Knight of One and be able to give Japan back to the Japanese.

But…he knew it was a futile dream. Honorary Britannians could only be entry-level soldiers; sure there was the odd officer every now and then due to exemplary work, but that was it. There was always a glass ceiling.

And that was why he stood here now, a soldier; fighting for a country he knew was rotten, in order to save a life here and there. That was all he could do.

No matter how hard Suzaku tried and dreamed, he didn’t have the power to change the world. He never would have.

He finally saw some light at the end of the tunnel—the long subway finally led up to what appeared to be an old warehouse. Looking up, he shrank back down in an instant when he saw the captain’s group had already made their way there.

But what about…Lelouch…

“Are they here?” the captain asked.

“I see no one, just worthless Elevens,” and with that, a gunshot rang out—and a sharp cry.
Suzaku’s breath hitched. What were they doing? There orders were to retrieve the capsule and eliminate the terrorists, not—!

“Sir, some Elevens heard us talking about it, should we--?”

“Kill them all.”

More shots. More screams. The sounds of bodies falling to the ground. And the blood, oh the blood—Suzaku could see it even beneath his eyelids—a pool that flowed and flowed all over the floor, over a still ticking watch, up to the small shoes of a little boy of ten years old—

Stop it!” roared Suzaku, jumping up from his hiding place and running towards the soldiers—he wasn’t permitted to carry a gun, but if he had—red flashed in his eyes, along with images—of that day, of the people before him now—of Lelouch—

“Get him!” the captain ordered, as a sharp pain hit the back of Suzaku’s head—he had only managed to grab hold of one of the soldiers, but it hadn’t done anything—it never did anything—

Without mercy, they threw him sharply against the wall. “Well now, here’s where you ran off to, Kururugi,” the captain smirked, walking towards him as the soldiers grabbed for the girl as well. “Insubordination, and a deserter, too.”

“I cannot follow my orders when my orders are to kill!” Suzaku roared.

He was about to say more, but was cut off when the captain grabbed him tightly around the throat, pressing the muzzle under his chin. “You were a soldier, Kururugi. All you had to do was follow orders. That was your job. What a pity your conscience couldn’t handle it.”

That’s true…all I am is a soldier…but… Suzaku’s fingers clenched into a fist. I don’t want to follow orders if this is the order that’s being given!

It didn’t matter now. Nothing mattered. With his death, all would be forgiven. All of it…
But it was a pity he couldn’t stay longer to try and save—

Once again, it seemed that a miracle had happened. The girl he had saved before suddenly jumped, pushing the captain out of the way. The pistol went off—Suzaku felt he bullet graze his hair as it flew upward.

“Don’t kill him!” the girl shouted to Suzaku’s astonishment. “He might be—”

She didn’t get a chance to continue speaking, as one of the soldier’s open fired. A bullet hit her straight in the forehead.

She fell, and Suzaku felt another pang in his chest. Someone just sacrificed their life for him. Their life. For him!

“Hey! Wait…wake up!” he shouted, but knew it was futile. Even without the bullet in her brain, when he knelt down, her hands were already cold.

“A pity,” the captain grunted. “We were supposed to bring her alive. Oh well; the terrorists killed her. Report back; we found the terrorists’ base and killed them.”

“The terrorists’?”

“That’s right,” the captain grinned. “We’ll make some terrorists if we have to.”

Suzaku couldn’t help it. His fingers clenched into a fist. They are—This is what the military has become?!

What is the point? What is the point of following orders if these are the orders I am to follow? Thousands of Eleven’s lives will be lost—who will be there to save them?

Britannia…it needs to be changed!

I want to change it!

And in that one moment, the strong façade of Kururugi Suzaku cracked. In that one moment, just briefly—gone as soon as it came—he wished for life.

And in that one moment, her hand reached out to his.

“Wha—What is this?”

Suzaku found himself floating through time and space.

“You wish for the power to change the world?”

“Who—?”

“You wish for that power, don’t you? To make things the way you wished they were. To make people see what you see. As it is now, you will never have that power. You need a catalyst for all that you wish to make possible to become reality.”

“I…”

“That is what you want, isn’t it?”

“I want…I want…”

“But in return for my power, you must grant my own wish. That is the contract.”

Power to change the world…A power to help save those I want to save…I don’t want power…I don’t want my life…but…I want…

“But I warn you…the Power of the Kings will make you lonely indeed.”

“Hmph. I’m already lonely enough!” It isn’t my time to die…if I don’t try something, then more Elevens will suffer. If this is how I can save more lives, then…then…

I accept your contract!”

The world seemed to right itself again. No one else had seen what he just had. Looking back up at the captain and the soldiers, all pointing their pistols at him, Suzaku glared.

He didn’t know what power he had just been given, but if it could save lives then…this wasn’t his time to die.

“Something you want to say, Kururugi?” the captain asked, leveling his pistol at him. “Unfortunately, they will be your last words.”

What was that stirring in his left eye? “Yes.” He glared at them. “You will pay for this crime, with your own deaths, someday. All killers must pay for the lives taken with their own life.”

And I wouldn’t bat an eyelash if you were to die in battle, right now.

He didn’t mean to think it—he could never think something like that normally, but now...

It didn’t matter. You couldn’t take thoughts back. And they meant nothing. It wasn’t like anyone could hear them.

There was silence for a moment. And then something extraordinary happened. All the soldiers lost the stern look on their faces and instead, held a look of sadness and deep remorse.

“I…see…” was all the captain said. “Our crime is…” his eyes flew to the slaughtered Elevens before him.

It was as if in slow motion—all the soldiers took out their pistols, and raised them towards their temple. Suzaku had only a second to realize what was going on. “Wait—!”

But it was too late. Shots fired all around the warehouse. Blood splattered everywhere—on the floor, on the walls, on Suzaku himself. He stood in shock, hardly able to process what he had just seen. All the soldier’s had just—as if—

She had said, “Do you wish for power?” and then—

Half-crazed, Suzaku turned towards the puddle of water on the floor. And then he saw it—his left eye was no longer a bright green. It was red; a dark, bloody red, with a strange symbol in the center. Blinking hard, it soon faded, but somehow, Suzaku knew how to call it back without trying.

No…this…

“You must pay for the lies taken with your own life…I wouldn’t bat an eyelash if you were to die in battle, right now.”

This was—

Suzaku could hardly keep his balance. Stumbling back against the wall, clutching his mouth to keep the violent churning in his stomach at bay, he gasped, did this—?”

He couldn’t keep it down. He retched and vomited on the floor in horror, his vision a bright red as flashes of the first time—the first murder—flew before his eyes.

This was…this power made me…I’m just a—!

Suzaku could handle it no more. He tried to crawl for the exit, but fainted before he got there.

Murderer… was his last thought.

“Suzaku!” Lelouch cried, running through the subway. “Suzaku!”

In the explosion, he and Suzaku had gotten separated. He ran and hid for a while, until the footsteps of the soldiers were long gone. And now he had searched for his friend, but not knowing where to look.

This new Suzaku was puzzling; he didn’t know how Suzaku would react or where he would go.
Seeing a light at the end of the tunnel, Lelouch ran for it, and emerged up some stairs in an abandoned warehouse.

The smell of blood hit him instantly. With sickening horror, he looked at all the bodies. Elevens and…were those the soldiers from before?

Looking around, his breath hitched as he saw the girl and Suzaku lying, unmoving. “Suzaku!”

Lelouch ran to his side, grabbing for his hand—letting out a sigh of relief when he felt warmth and saw Suzaku’s chest rising and falling underneath his armor. Suzaku…thank goodness…

“Hmmm, why don’t you hold me like that?” a voice spoke. Lelouch turned in alarm, but saw that instead it was just the girl—as she rose from the floor, wiping blood off her forehead. “Or do you care more for him than a poor, defenseless girl?”

Violet eyes narrowed. “What happened here?”

Instead of directly answering, she smirked, “Everything has begun.”

Lelouch stared. He didn’t know what to make of that—what to make of her—And it looked like the only person who could give him the answers was unconscious at the moment.

Sighing, Lelouch pondered his options. He could try and flag down the military to bring them to safety, but after that last fiasco, he’d rather not rely on them. He could always try to find an abandoned Knightmare, since he was rather good at piloting them but…that might take time. And hacking into one was not easy, or so he heard.

That left only one safe option for them. Grabbing his phone, he called, “Sayoko…Yes, I’m fine. I know it sounds odd, but I need you to get down to the Shinjuku ghetto, and have the means of transporting three people…Look, I know it sounds impossible, but you’re the head of the Shinozaki clan, you can do it—”

It was hours later, in a warm bed that Suzaku awoke. In the daze, he didn’t recognize the surroundings. Glancing around, it looked like he was in a bedroom. Someone’s bedroom. A very neat and clean—almost to the point of obsession—someone—

And that was when he remembered it—the girl’s words, the shots ringing out, and the blood, oh, the blood—

Jerking up in bed, Suzaku held a hand against his mouth to stop the sudden nausea—

“Ah, you’re awake.” A chiming voice spoke in Japanese, as the door slid open. Suzaku looked up at him with fearful eyes.

“Lelouch?”

“That’s right,” Lelouch smiled, sitting down on the bed next to him.

“Japanese?” Suzaku asked, switching back into the language of their youth. “I thought you had—”

“Forgotten it?” Lelouch smiled. “No, I figured it might be useful someday. And it is, isn’t it? In this day and age, it’s our own private language.”

“Not if you hang around the ghettos,” Suzaku eyed him suspiciously.

“Ah, don’t worry about that,” Lelouch chuckled. “Anyway, we’re not in the ghetto anymore, as you may have guessed. I found you and the girl back there, so I thought I’d treat you to a little hospitality.”

“The—the girl?” Suzaku stammered. “But how is that possible? She was shot—”

Lelouch stared. “No she wasn’t. She was definitely still alive when I found her—she’s sleeping on the couch in the living room now. Until I find out why she was in that capsule, I can’t—”

“Lelouch!” Suzaku cut in. “That girl—she is—do you know what she made me—!”

Lelouch had never seen his old friend so upset. “What happened?”

“No! I can’t—”

“Suzaku…” Lelouch’s hand grazed his. Honest violet eyes looked up into frightened green ones. “You know you can tell me anything.”

For a moment, Suzaku didn’t speak, fingers clenching. And then, finally releasing, he sighed, “All right.”

He didn’t want to tell him—there were many things he didn’t want to tell him—But Lelouch was asking and—he had seen it there. Maybe it wasn’t that hard to figure out what went on. And surely the girl, if she was miraculously alive—surely she would have said something. It would have been found out anyway. Yes, and better to tell Lelouch now—to let him know he didn’t mean to and that it wasn’t entirely his fault—Yes, that was what he had to do now.

And Lelouch listened, wide eyed, at his story. Disbelief formed on his face as Suzaku told him of the power the girl had granted him; what it had done. He finally ended it by showing him that—the demon eye, the thing the girl had cursed him with after he stupidly asked for it.
And when he was finished, there was silence once more.

When Lelouch spoke up, he said, “Your power…it must…it must come from your thoughts. Whatever you think—no, it’s what you believe. You make people believe what you believe, and they act that way. It sounds like a very powerful thing indeed.”

“It’s a dangerous thing!” Suzaku cut in. “I didn’t mean to—!”

“Yes, I know. You’ll need to learn to control this power—when to use it; what thoughts to be emphasized. It sounds to me that if you used this power, you could get anything you wanted.”

“That’s exactly it! This curse—!”

“Curse?” Lelouch stared at him. “No, no, Suzaku, this isn’t a curse. This is a gift.” His smile widened. “Yes, the greatest gift of all.”

“But—”

“It saved your life, didn’t it?” Lelouch continued to smile in that somewhat sinister way. “And you have just been given the key, Suzaku. The key to achieving everything you ever wanted.”

“Well…” he glanced away. “It’s still…underhanded.”

“Sometimes, underhanded methods are the way to achieving the best ends.” Lelouch continued to grin.

Green eyes began to narrow. “Best ends?”

“Exactly. You know, Suzaku, both of us, together—we could accomplish anything.”

“Well…I guess…”

“And with that power of yours, do you know what we could do together?”

Suzaku’s voice lowered in disapproval. “What?

It was then that Lelouch’s smile grew even wider—bordering on the smile of an insane man. “Destroy Britannia.”

Chapter 2 here.

There. I hope it wasn't too bad or too far-fetched. I chose Suzaku's geass because I always thought that he thinks the world would be better if everyone thought like him. Thus he gets a mind-haxy geass too. Only his is scarier. D:

Anyway, if you guys liked it, then I'll continue the story. If not, then I won't bother.
