Phoenix and Crane: the Suzaku/Nunnally community - [livejournal.com profile] nunnally_suzaku

I figured every other pairing has its own comm, and this pairing seems to have a measurable number of fans (based on the fics etc. I've seen for it and the comments I've had on my own writing). Already posted: a list of fanart/cosplay pictures links and a list of fanfic links.

Hey, I didn't have to say anything, you said exactly what I was thinking. I'm also pretty viscerally bothered by the squick, but that's mostly because I stumbled - completely without warning - on a graphic, full-color Lelouch/Nunnally doujin. Imaged burned into brain, kind of ruined afternoon. Did not want.

When writing the pairing in R1, the Jailbait Wait trope is in order.
I don't mind that at all. In fact, Suzaku being chivalrous for Nunnally's sake is sort of the heart of the pairing IMO. (Also, gasp, a trope I haven't heard of/seen before. I can tell what it is from the name, but a trip to TV tropes may be in order. Thank god my uni hw is done.)

All this kind of points back to my original sort-of-complaint, which is that I'm sometimes a tad afraid of what *fandom* does to certain pairings, even if I don't find the pairing itself bothersome. I actually think adult-Tianzi/Xing ke (if he lives that long, although considering the non-progression of his disease in R2, he just might) is kind of sweet and thought it was sort of hinted at in the show that they were destined for one another, but I don't really look for it in fandom because I expect to find a lot of weird, graphic loli stuff. And hey, it's their business if somebody is into that, but I'd prefer to enjoy the thought of it away from people who do it in a way that bothers me.

it seems to stem from the same sniggery, juvenile school of thought that gives rise to a lot of slash pairings (and pairings in general): namely, that if two people show affection for each other, they MUST be feeling some sexual attraction

Uh... isn't that kind of what Suzaku/Nunnally stems from? Don't get me wrong, I love the pairing, but it's not like there's a lot of canon inspiration for it outside of "they're affectionate toward one another", so I don't really see why you'd be criticizing that thought process.

Also, the slash wrong gender/orientation combo... it's not like most of the characters' orientations are explicitly stated anywhere.

I always thought that little conversation Nunnally and Lelouch had at the end of episode 21 (or 20? The one with the giant pizza) hinted at - at the very least - one-sided Nunnally/Suzaku. "Euphy says she and Suzaku are becoming very close!"; in both renditions, Nunnally sounds somewhat sad (?) when she follows this up with, "They...make a good couple, don't they?" Not to mention Lelouch's reply of, "Nunnally, you...?" I dunno, I could be wrong. Did anyone else pick this up?

The more popular slash pairings in CG are actually a lot more believable than some of the ones in other fandoms.

Yeah, I've seen a lot of slash pairings for which I go, "Really? Where the hell did you get that from?" but for Suzaku/Lelouch and Gino/Suzaku, well, I can totally understand. Hell, Sayoko thinks Suzaku and Lelouch are lovers after she over-hears them talking early in R1, but then again she thinks he's a crossdressing playboy and a siscon, so she jumps to conclusions quickly and is an unreliable narrator (I swear, the R1 Sayoko-crack side materials are the best).
