The Japan Liberation Battle Front has taken hostages at the Lakeside River (kawakuchikohan) Hotel, among them Ashford Student Council members and Princess Euphemia. To save Euphemia and as a declaration to Cornelia, Lelouch leads Kallen's group as 'Black Knights' to free the hostages. However, once he faces Euphemia, Lelouch turns his gun at her.
