So we were all probably wondering why a certain character was missing a certain something from a certain light-detecting organ. Well here's our answer...
It's a mystical, magical thing. It takes direct eye contact for the geass to work. Anything in the way makes it un-work.
I don't think it's a matter of messing with the light, but if you wanted to argue that, then yes a lens would significantly disperse the light moving outward from the eye. Because the point of a lens is to take a massive amount of light and focus it small for your eye, opposite would take the focused light and throw it everywhere. Rightright?
Mao wore shades to screw up Lulu's geass, not his own, I think. He was trying to prevent his mind being controlled, not stop himself from reading others', right?
