Do you think that Lelouch loved someone romantically in the end? There have been hints with C.C., Shirley and Kallen.Personally i think that the staff was going with C.C. and Lelouch in the first season and in the second they took the route for Lelouch and Kallen.Shirley was in school and it was hard in the first place.
What is your opinion?

I generally have trouble assigning much romance to the boy who had to ask Shirley about love and then immediately parsed it as the way he feels for his sister. Honestly, I don't think Lelouch's problem is as simple as asexuality. I think Lelouch just can't differentiate love and it's all the same to him, regardless of who it is for. And I really think his talk with Shirley during the China arc reveals this. So I'm not so sure romantic love has an actual register in Lelouch's mind. As for the scene with Kallen, he's a depressed boy who was clearly quoting lines. He sounded so atrocious. His scenes where he kisses Shirley, he's comforting her. His confession of his love for Euphie, more of this all-encompassing perspective toward love. C.C. is especially complicated in that she takes on an almost motherly role for him at times but he very clearly loves her as well.

Essentially, Lelouch loves all of his special people. I think the final event "picture drama" captures this well. Now, I think the creators have hinted heavily toward it being more likely for Lelouch to have eventually gravitated toward Shirley had he had the time to stop focusing on rebellion and mature a little. They love to focus on Shirley and Lelouch in side materials, particularly his final dream sequence. They also imply that what he and Suzaku have is a very strong and unique version of friendship/love/whatever that's almost impossible to define.

So yes, in conclusion, Lelouch doesn't classify love in his mind so romance hadn't had the time to come into the picture for him. Had he lived longer, it probably would have.

I find it hard to take seriously any instance of Lelouch's reckoning of his own romantic prospects. I can't help but think that the reason he put so much focus on Shirley was because she'd died in the way that she died. Her death was the first of a series of emotionally traumatizing events that came in relatively rapid succession. I really don't think it's thoughts of twu wub as much as Lelouch tearing himself up over the "what if"s and "how could I possibly make it up to her?"s. I was talking with some friends a few days ago about SO's that die. Even if you knew it wasn't going to work out, even if you weren't star-crossed lovers, having a loved one die really sticks with you, and it takes a surprising amount of time to move on. And quite frankly, after Shirley's death and the events that transpired, I never got the feeling that Lelouch was emotionally sound. All his decisions and thought processes felt like those of a boy who was stuck in a bad place in the grieving process.

As for everyone else, who knows? Shirley died on him, which broke him, and he died on everyone else, so it becomes a moot point. As for Suzaku, the underwear-changing comment will forever baffle me.

... have to ask though: underwear-changing??

Taniguchi: From my point of view, Lelouch and Suzaku's relationship in the previous series did not go beyond that of reunited childhood friends. It wasn't "friendship" -- they were playing at a "make-believe friendship". With R2, my intention was to show how it turned into "friendship" in the truest sense of the word. ......As for the part with the kneeling, if Lelouch hadn't done that, he might have been killed by Suzaku, and Suzaku, had he not stepped on Lelouch's face, would probably not have been able to control his rage.

--Basically, it was necessary to go that far* for Lelouch and Suzaku to be able to rebuild their bonds. [*kneeling + stepping on face]

Taniguchi: It's a matter of definition, but for me, the relationship between "good friends", to put it bluntly, is one in which "they are able to change each other's soiled underwear even when they've become doddering geezers".*
Fu-kuyama: Though in my opinion, that's already crossed the line into "love" territory (laugh).

[*This line sparked an outbreak of "Eeewwww, Taniguchi", "Taniguchi's definition of friendship sets the bar too high" and "...Does Taniguchi actually have such friends?" on 2ch]

And because you'll probably want it:
