Currently not at home and I’m using my mother’s laptop. I was unable to take screenshots. I apologize! I’ll add them on Monday/Tuesday.
Episode 3 Discussion!
Finally we understand why Lelouch has such distaste for Britannia. Clovis tries to talk Lelouch into returning with him but Lelouch is certain that, if he does, he’ll be taken advantage of and used for political gain. But Lelouch’s main reason for approaching Clovis is about his mother’s death. After not getting much of an answer out of Clovis besides hysteria and claiming he didn’t do it Lelouch finally uses his Geass on his half-brother only to find out that Clovis doesn’t know much about that day and gives us two new names in the Britannia family: Schneizel and Cornelia. And, just like Lelouch, after getting the information he needs he’s completely done with you. Bwah! Poor Clovis. I wish we had more time getting to know his character because he seemed such short lived. Did anyone else notice Lelouch’s full red eye? Does that ever happen again; because I don’t remember him ever being able to “end” his Geass spell to return the person back to themselves. Even later in the episode when he finishes asking Kallen about why she’s a terrorist his eye doesn’t repeat that same action. I wonder if it was something Sunrise thought about using and then decided it wasn’t worth keeping it around.
So back to normal school life. Being VP of the student council must be hard work! Lelouch doesn’t seem to do much haha. It is nice to see Lelouch as a normal student and not the killer he became the night before, but it does seem to have gotten to him. After watching part of a news broadcast and avoiding Shirley’s curiousity he almost throws up. It’s just as Lelouch has said: His nerves aren’t cut out for this just yet. And, what a coincidence, the terrorist girl that he helped is actually a student that attends Ashford! Immediately he knows he has to confront her, but he has the anonymity of Geass. Too bad for Lelouch, but great for us: we find out that he can only use his power once. Nice awkward moment between him and Kallen—immediately she suspects him. I mean, how would he know about Shinjuku? Why tell her not to say anything about it?
C’mon, Lelouch. The terrorist you helped were semi-advanced, right? They had their own Knightmare, right? You’re telling her to do something that requires little to no common sense. Only an idiot would mention Shinjuku—and what’s more, Lelouch, her “school character” is obviously totally different from whom she really is. I think this part is hilarious because anyone would be smart enough not to mention Shinjuku. If anything Lelouch was the stupid one lol. He mentioned Shinjuku! Granted, he thought that Geass would save him again.
Yay, Nunnally is so cute. It’s refreshing to see Lelouch and his sister together. He cares so much about her… He’s willing to lie to anyone but her, how sweet. But also somewhat naïve… But I guess his motivation is to create a world for Nunnally to be safe in. Also, we find out that the girl with green hair from the first episode was an experiment. Apparently she’s been around a while (judging by a WWII-like image). It can’t get out that they were running experiments on that girl which must mean that she is important in some way.
The rest of the episode seems to focus around Lelouch and Kallen and the whole Shinjuku incident. Is that him? I can’t tell from a memory. If it is him… blah blah blah.
Anyways, we do get to see the side of Lelouch that is great with planning. He just knows what that person is most likely to do. The whole bathroom scene is a perfect example. How did he know Kallen was going to try to make him stay? How did he get it down right? If she didn’t stop him would he try to buy time? My question is why the phone in the bathroom? How would you explain that? When the knife came out I got the impression that Lelouch didn’t really plan for that but nevertheless everything played out in his favor…
And the bastard got to see a nice view of Kallen.
Oh, and Lelouch. It seems Suzaku is still alive! And they’re charging him for the murder of Clovis. What are you going to do, Lelouch!

Ah, our first look at Marianne's death. I still have trouble seeing how exactly this depiction fits with what we're shown later in R2; maybe the rewatch will help. Also, it's awful to see there's such hatred and division among the Britannians themselves over the commoners-nobles thing, in addition to their racism. I guess it keeps revolutions from happening, though. Ha.
Interesting that in response to "who killed her?" Clovis can only give the names of people who know -- and rather than acknowledging that phrasing, Lelouch thinks they're the main culprits. And Cornelia can't even offer anything later, iirc...
I still wonder if Lelouch's murder of Clovis was because he was on a power-high from the Geass, because he was testing how far he was willing to go, or what. (And it still doesn't stir much of a reaction in me other than "whoa, they actually offed a named character with a background and all this early in the series?")
--and with the flash to Ashford right after, it's almost disconcerting, the differences. But I do love outrageous, flirty Milly.
It's interesting, Lelouch's reaction to the memory of Clovis's death here when we see him do far worse later without batting an eye. I wouldn't say he suffers from a decay of morality, but rather that he becomes inured to it. Still kinda sad, though.
...It bugs me that Kallen's grades are at the top of the class in Ashford -- or so says Rivalz, at least -- but later on (in R2, I think?) Lelouch ranks her among the top members of the Black Knights as one of the least intelligent. Unless he's somehow amassed a collection of supergeniuses, I have trouble believing it.
(I love her temper. "I wish I didn't have to act like a freaking invalid!")
...interesting. Lelouch said to her "answer my questions," but she only answered two before the Geass gave out. And we certainly see no signs of it kicking in later, so... what gives? I thought this thing was supposed to be absolute.
It's either kind of creepy how Nunnally can hear Lelouch coming before a trained ninja, or her blindness really has made her hearing amazing.
You have to wonder what sort of experimentation they were doing on C.C. without the Emperor's knowledge. Pictures of her from the past, a paper on "Freud's theory of the super-ego"...
"I wish the world were a gentle place." "When you can see again, I'm sure it will be." Ouch. OUCH. "I promise." OUCH.
(I suppose a sword to the gut's a better way to go than swallowing a thousand needles, though. Marginally.)He's lying, but "only not to her"... Omission of the truth isn't a lie, huh, Lelouch?
...where the hell did Rivalz get his hands on Moët et Chandon?? Unless it was a present from that old guy in episode 1 or something...
Kallen is way too trigger-happy with that knife. I don't know if she just thinks waving it around is going to automatically make things proceed the way they're supposed to or what.
And the timing on that phone call was just too uncanny. Oh Lulu, always pulling crazy shit like this. At least it's not as unbelievable as the Schneizel thing in R2, though.
...I love Kallen's intensity about things that only lets her notice she's not dressed when someone points it out to her. XD; Actually, I really didn't have much of an opinion on her one way or the other the first time through, but I really find myself liking her a lot this time around.
Suzaku. T_T

This is a great point. Not only that, Clovis offers the names as people who might know, and Lelouch runs with it as an indictment.
I've always loved how disconcerting the flash back to Ashford is. It's such a great way to show how completely Lelouch distances his worlds.
It's interesting, Lelouch's reaction to the memory of Clovis's death here when we see him do far worse later without batting an eye. I wouldn't say he suffers from a decay of morality, but rather that he becomes inured to it. Still kinda sad, though.
I actually think that it depends on Lelouch's state of mind at the time. Personal death is still DEEPLY EFFECTIVE on him, and we see him FREAK OUT each and every time. But if he's in his RAGE MODE, sure he can off people left and right without the slightest reaction. Usually this happens after some tiff with Suzaku. :\ I think by the time he's mass-killing as the emperor though, it messes him up a lot because he's really taking it all in and not just chalking it up to battle loss (his old game mentality).

Great inconsistency catch! I bet the writers forgot. XD

I noticed that this time as well! However, the ability to get good grades and intelligence can be two different things. She may also have an easier time because she's faking illness and has to take a lot of time off.
Frankly, most of what we've seen of Kallen indicates that she's *not* that smart, even though she's a capable pilot and fighter. Not stupid, but certainly not bright.
Re: SPOILERS
I'd say he probably was at least a bit sincere here...not that it did him much good in the end. XD
Ah, our first look at Marianne's death. I still have trouble seeing how exactly this depiction fits with what we're shown later in R2; maybe the rewatch will help.
Well, keep in mind that the scene as originally portrayed was later revealed to have been a complete setup by V.V. and gang.
I do wonder if that was what the creators initially meant to reveal though. Not too sure about it.
It's interesting, Lelouch's reaction to the memory of Clovis's death here when we see him do far worse later without batting an eye. I wouldn't say he suffers from a decay of morality, but rather that he becomes inured to it. Still kinda sad, though.
It's telling, really, that Lelouch didn't have too much trouble killing Clovis but definitely felt the consequences after-the-fact. In a way, you see this process continue after Shirley's dad died, in spite of his earlier proclamations of walking the "path of carnage" or something to that effect.
...It bugs me that Kallen's grades are at the top of the class in Ashford -- or so says Rivalz, at least -- but later on (in R2, I think?) Lelouch ranks her among the top members of the Black Knights as one of the least intelligent. Unless he's somehow amassed a collection of supergeniuses, I have trouble believing it.
This has already been said, but grades aren't necessarily the best (or only) indication of intelligence and vice versa. I don't think it's actually a contradiction, really, given we also see Kallen do plenty of goofy stuff and fall for Lelouch's tricks during the rest of the season.
That and most of the named Black Knights are adults who have already grown way past high school age, which makes a straight comparison a bit simplistic. Older and more experienced people are generally supposed to be a lot smarter than someone who is only 17 or 18. Lelouch and, say, Nina would probably be the two most notable exceptions. I'd say Kallen was just supposed to be a little smarter than the average high-school student in her class. Enough to stand out (since Lelouch was lazy and all), but nothing more and nothing less.
And in fact, among the Black Knights, only Kaguya is both younger and smarter than the bulk of them. Then again she was portrayed as more intelligent or at least more politically savvy than almost everyone else, the adults included, because it fit her character type: a princess who is supposed to be wise beyond her years.
...interesting. Lelouch said to her "answer my questions," but she only answered two before the Geass gave out. And we certainly see no signs of it kicking in later, so... what gives? I thought this thing was supposed to be absolute.
Lelouch just...wasn't fast enough and didn't give out his next order in time? A bit of that happened with Clovis too. I guess timing and maintaining focus is important unless the order itself allows otherwise.
You have to wonder what sort of experimentation they were doing on C.C. without the Emperor's knowledge. Pictures of her from the past, a paper on "Freud's theory of the super-ego"...
Sigh. Once again, hints of something Geass-related we didn't really get any elaboration on.

- I also wonder if Kallen couldn't have picked a better cover than the sick girl, as it would prove to be pretty dang annoying in a real crisis situation. Though I do like that she stays in school out of wishes for Naoto. Almost like she stays in school at the end of R2 out of Lelouch's wishes. Baw.
- It's interesting that Clovis was managing to keep C.C. a secret from Charles, as Bartley seems to imply since Charles was apparently searching for C.C. for a long time.
- I love Jeremiah's coup for purebloods.
- I get so squee about just watching the council be adorable.
- LOL Shirley's jealousy over Kallen. I like how you even catch a smidgen during Rivalz's teasing Lelouch about his interest in Kallen. You can see Shirley's reaction in the background.
- I also love the way Nunnally's connection to Lelouch is instantly so disarming to people who know him. It always hits them in their opinion spot hard.
- I always find Lelouch's reaction to Clovis' death interesting, even as he taunts himself for being too affected by it. It's interesting how Lelouch distrusts his entire family at this point when he was more comfortable with certain members as a child. His immediately assuming Clovis wants him back so he can use him and Nunnally is especially telling of this.
- So many adorable Britannian history snippets in the school scenes.
- Pizza Hut!
- So much foreshadowing in Lelouch and Nunnally's talk about her seeing and about him lying to her.
- I love Zero's "Q1" nickname for Kallen. So cute.
- I love Lelouch's look of DDD: when he realizes that not only is Suzaku alive but he's also being framed for murder.
- Shirley and Milly are adorable.
- This so has so many convenient happenings. Such as Shirley showing up just as things get tense between Lelouch and Kallen (really what was he going to do? run away? no, that's not suspicious at all. not to mention, she'd catch his slow ass), Kallen being suddenly named to the council just as she and Lelouch are about to have their private talk and Lelouch's Zero phone call coming at the EXACT TIME to save his life. Someone pointed out Kallen's quickness to stabbity in another post, and I have to agree. She doesn't think these things through at all.
- This episode also brought up an interesting point about Geass. How does Lelouch end it? Concentration break? He didn't close his eye when he was talking to Kallen, he just stopped talking because he was taken off-guard. I don't think this ever happens again. It's just an odd outlier.
Re: Random Observations w/ R2 Spoilers
I think Marianne's "assassination" and Nunnally's injury has permanently tainted the whole family for him. If you look at Lelouch's reminiscences later on about past happiness and the like, it's always with Ashford or at the Kururugi shrine; his childhood as a prince just doesn't rate.
IIRC, it even comes out in the way Lelouch reacts to Euphie. Despite his childhood thing for her, while he might be polite and kind when they interact privately, there's a distinct holding back and slight condescension there. At least until the SAZ conversation about Nunnally, and we know how that ended.

Which is ironic, really, because if Charles hadn't set all his kids against each other and himself as obfuscation for his emo Rapture plan, Clovis might just have handed C.C. over with a "hey dad, here's that girl you were looking for. We on for golf on Tuesday?"

You know for being such a great liar, Lelouch... sucks at lying.
-2 This Jeremiah/Viletta thing never goes anywhere
I think they're talking about the coup.
-1 Super-random THIS IS WHY I HATE BRITANNIANS
Yeah, I still don't get that one.

-1 Okay, seriously, the voice sounds JUST like Lelouch. It could be a coincidence, but you were just talking to him, and now you've heard the voice over the phone…before your excuse for not recognizing him was that you couldn't remember the voice!
LOL
Oh also, forgot one thing: Kallen, you JUST found out that Lelouch is Nunnally's caretaker, and that Nunnally is blind and crippled. You want to leave her with no support system? Considering that you basically obsess over your dead older brother for the entire first season? Boooooo.
OMG YOU'RE RIGHT. I totally missed this.

Also, +1 And Lelouch actually thinks he won't lie to Nunnally…seriously, he keeps this pretense up throughout the series but he lies to her all the time!
I always found this a bit weird about Lelouch. It comes up in R2, as well, that he just can't bring himself to lie to her... but... he lies to her all the time? The very first time he meets Suzaku he was caught out in a lie to his sister. It's weird. It's like he classifies things as 'lies' and then there's 'lies', and it's only the latter that he can't tell to his sister. I wonder how he defines the difference.
But oh man I won't pretend I wasn't waiting for that "swallow a thousand needles" thing to come and bite him in the ass eventually. Eh, maybe in a more gurotastic anime than this one.
-1 Okay, seriously, the voice sounds JUST like Lelouch. It could be a coincidence, but you were just talking to him, and now you've heard the voice over the phone…before your excuse for not recognizing him was that you couldn't remember the voice!
UGH That whole thing with the phone call always seemed like such an asspull to me. I mean, okay, so he seemed to make at least an effort to lower his voice a little, but still...

Eh, they actually do re-use this same footage after the "truth" of the murder is finally explained.
I have more trouble believing that the logistical side of the "truth" could have easily worked though, which is why I happen to doubt it was necessarily part of the original plans, but they didn't exactly change the entire animation of this scene in particular (or at least not when the actual explanation came around, that is. I don't recall if they went for a different angle in a previous flashback).

I KNOW RIGHT?! Watching R1 for the first time (having utterly spoilered myself, I didn't buy the DVDs till last January), I totally shipped Jeremiah/Viletta. To begin with, it seems like she could just be loyal to him as a means of self-advancement, but later she sticks with him even after he's disgraced. D'awww.
(no subject)
I like to think that Lelouch talks in English while Zero talks in Japanese, but the English is spoken as Japanese for the convenience of the Japanese audience, and vice versa for the dub. That would make the fact that nobody picks up on the similar voice somewhat believable, at any rate.
That said, also remember that it's established that the Geass universe has devices that can completely and believably imitate someone else's voice, so voice alone is not a reliable way to match two people in any case.

I was legit jizzing through the shower scene.The phone call was particularly epic because lmao how could they just stack stuff like this together? It's so beautifully-misplaced in the gakuen setting and it just makes me laugh despite how serious Lelouch is trying to make it out to be.also Milly, why you make my life so complete. ;w;
