Sure, he comes to understand that a little, just in time to die for Lelouch, but he's still a cold, apathetic killer because of how he was raised. It's not entirely his fault.
SEE, THAT'S THE THING. He was raised to kill anyone that got in his way, and he did even when he was first introduced. He lived almost his entire life alone trained to just slaughter anyone who crossed his path in a way that he didn't like, what did people expect of him? He starts to learn, and he starts to move, even slowly, beyond it. Yes, he's incredibly attached to Lelouch, but a good part of that is also because Lelouch is the only person who has (appearances, at least) been the first person to ever even care if he lived or died. Cut the guy some slack. :|

What part of "raised as a killer" do you not understand? His entire life, he was ingrained to believe that those who stood in the way would have to be eliminated. Even when he slowly begins to understand human emotions, that concept is still ingrained into his thoughts and dictates his motivation or drive. Lelouch was the only person to ever suggest that someone cared more about Rolo than his own life (even if it was fake), and Rolo's motivations were determined by that as well. His drive became to be the most important person in Lelouch's life because Lelouch was the most important in his. This, along with how he was raised, led to the "kill others" frame of mind.
Essentially, it's not entirely his fault for the way he thinks.
Besides, if Lelouch hadn't been an asshat and instead been sensitive to Rolo's distress and emotions, he could have comforted him, told him that Rolo could be his sibling even though Nunally might be there as his sister as well. That might have calmed down and reassured Rolo, and helped him deal with his bottled up feeling of hatred and jealousy for Nunally.
Exactly ;_; Lelouch should have just told him the three could be happy instead of confusing Rolo by telling him he was his only brother but then doing everything for Nunnally
Shirley was a character created and used to provide some angst for Lelouch and to make him see that his actions would cause reactions that even he could not forsee. I saw her as set up to be killed off from the beginning. Look up the definition of "Stuff in a Fridge" on tvtropes.com because it explains it even better.
Why direct your hate at Rolo, though? If anything, it's Lelouch's fault for dragging Shirley into the whole thing, which led to her death. Her being dragged in would've led to her death anyway, be it by Rolo's hands or someone else's. Did you hate Mao for doing the things he did to Shirley? What he did could be considered even worse.
I do care about Nunnally. She's one of my favorite characters. But she might not be dead and if she was, it wouldn't be Rolo's fault. Rolo's motivation for wanting to kill her was already explained so I'm not doing it again. If you can't see it, it's not my fault.

Furthermore, unless during that death scene of his he showed remorse for his actions, he never showed any remorse for his actions.

Any of the cast is up to die at any moment. This is how Sunrise works. I read the Korean Blog Spoilers and knew he was going to die, but that doesn't make it any less upsetting for me. And yes, I would still be upset if he were some big dude with a beard or something because of the manner of his death, not simply because of what he looks like. I like Rolo as a character partially because of his appearance but more for his personality/background, and thus am upset about his death because of how it occured, not just because he happens to also be eyecandy.

The environment one is brought up in, the conditions for the crime, and the motive behind killing make a difference in how a person is tried or convicted in murders all the time.
See this is what I find disturbing in a lot of the arguments for Rolo here. So much "it's not his fault" or "he is not to blame". Not you hales731, but some of the other comments here state these things over and over. Hell, there is an example a few posts below. I mean that's the same logic killers and other criminals use in court all the time. I just don't buy it. Sure the upbringing has something to do with how he behaves now, but he is not blameless.
I pitied Rolo this episode. But I can't say I cried for him and I can't say I'm not glad his character is gone. I always found his Lelouch obsession extremely creepy and disturbing. But I do admit it is due to Rolo's actions that Lelouch has regained his sanity and is on the path to redemption.

However, because he was brought up the way he was, his perception of right and wrong is skewed a "if it's going to help me/my mission, it's right" point of view. Were he brought to trial for his crimes, this would probably make a difference in how he'd be convicted. Probably manslaughter rather than homicide.
And it's not fair to blame just Rolo for killing people when Lelouch and Suzaku have done just as terrible things if not worse. There's no point in hating on one person for doing wrong when there are others who are just as bad. I can understand if a person dislikes Rolo because of other aspects of his personality (like your own example of his obsession being creepy), but to hate him just because he killed another character seems rather hypocritical if other characters that have killed aren't hated as well.
See, I didn't hate Rolo because he killed Shirley. To be honest, I never really cared for Shirley. It's the reason he killed Shirley. It's the same reason he was going to kill Nunnally. It's that insane obsession/possessiveness of his and I just can't stand it. One can say that is due to his upbringing too, but it doesn't make me hate that aspect of his character any less.
Same here >> Shirley was my favourite female character, and I really like Nunnally too but ... it's not Rolo's fault ;_; It's only logical that he's obsessed with staying with Lelouch, he didn't know happiness before his life with him (ARABESQUE BAWL ;____;) and even though killing out of jealousy is going too far, you can't expect him to suddenly understand what it means to take a life when he's been ORDERED to do so all his life, and specially when nobody's ever cared about him ;____;
I cared that Shirley was stuffed into the fridge; I had been defending her from bashing since the beginning of the first season when everyone and the dog hated her for "cockblocking Kallen or C.C.". I adore Nunnally and was very sad when she went MIA (as well as happy that she might not be dead). But that does NOT mean I can't care for Rolo, who was raised as an assassin and didn't know how to deal with ANYTHING not related to missions. And yes, I'd care no matter how he was designed: he was cute-looking, but also one really fucked-up and (IMHO) intresting character.
Agreed. \o/ From what I can understand in the last bit when he was using his Geass, he was saying how he was the Order's tool, and then nii-san's tool after that, but thanks to the memories he had, he was to finally become a "human". He says that this (i.e. saving Lelouch) is out of his own free will.
And that was why I cried even after watching the scene for the sixth time. :/
