What does the name Lelouch mean?

It sounds French in origin to me. Yet when I tried to look it up on baby names sites, it doesn't turn up anywhere. Is it a real name or is it just made up by the author of CG?

There's a French actor called Claud Lelouch, so the name is not entirely made up. I have a sneaking suspicion, though, that it only started appearing in baby names sites after Code Geass got popular.

It's a French last name, but not a first name, so you won't find it on baby name sites :p
It litteraly means "the shady one" or "the ladle", choose your favorite meaning XD There's a famous French director named Claude Lelouch as the person above me said. I've always thought Lelouch's name had been inspired by him (I wouldn't be surprised if he was well-known in Japan). I've tried looking it up on genealogy websites but it's seems to be a very rare name, there's only a hundred of French people called Lelouch and most of them live in the South-East of France.
And I hope nobody will have the weird idea of calling their children Lelouch, that would be too weird XD

According to the French Wikipedia, which used a book entitled Les noms des Juifs de Tunisie (The names of the Jews of Tunisia) as its source), Lelouch (http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lelouch) and its close relative Lellouche (http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lellouche) are North African surnames derived from an Arabic word meaning "lamb." Makes sense, seeing as Claude Lelouch is of Algerian descent.

Oddly, Lelouch Lamperouge doesn't really strike me as being Arabic in the slightest.

That's interesting and it makes sense for the origin of the name, but I highly doubt whoever decided on his name looked into that XD

As for his last name, Lamperouge always made me think of the French expression "lanterne rouge", which is used to call the last one in a cyclist race. It came to mean "to lag behind" and it fits in the way, but I think I'm seeing too much into that (and "lanterne rouge" also translates as "red light district" XP). I really hope we'll be told how they picked his name someday...

Well in France where people would immediately understand it as "the shady one", people would laugh XD (just as I laughed the first time I heard Lulu's full name). But in a non-French speaking country, I guess it sounds cool.

By the way, even if it's funny, it can't be translated as "the ladle" since it's a feminine name, so it would be "Lalouche" (I can't believe I haven't thought of that before D:)
