What do you prefer to see CG in? Or any anime? I prefer English because I hate having to divert my eyes away from the action just to read the subtitles so I can keep up with the plot. Even if the English dub can sound melodramatic or corney sometimes. I watched CG once in Jap and a second time in English and I do have to admit that Lelouch's English voice is way sexier ; ) I think his voice in the Jap version is strange because it makes him sound like a 30 year old man rather then an 18 year old. But that's just me. ^^

in before all-encompassing-dub-hating

TBH I prefer the English dub of CG~! After hearing the Japanese ver. I think the characters fit pretty well, hey--I even like some of the English voices better.

For "any anime"? It depends! People ask me this question a bunch and all I can reply with is "I like good dubs". There are good/bad dubs just as there are good/bad original voices. Generally I'll watch both before saying one is better than the other (And even then, they're both different languages so I can't always say one is better than the other).

I prefer the Japanese version. The English dub is okay, but I really didn't like a lot of the voice actors (epseically Kanon. D': Me no likey Kanon's voice.)

I still watch the dub, mostly because it's convenient to listen to when doing school or whatever, but when given the choice I prefer subs.

I like Japanese more. They usually do better voice-works and be in character.
And about Lelouch sounds older than he should be, I bet the director direct his seiyuu to act like that. The seiyuu is more than capable to use his 18 year old voice if he wants to, so it's intentional.

It's not like I against English dubber or anything. I prefer to watch and read everything in it's original language if I can, since there's some parts that you can only find in original versions.

I watch the english version because I can do something else and listen to code geass in the backround. I generally prefer the dub over sub. Most of the time, anyway.

I watched two episodes of the dub. It was decent.

As for subs, I'm just so used to reading them that I can watch and read at the same time XD

JUN FUKUYAMA IS WIN. I didn't like Johnny Young Bosch too much :P

I like Japanese more. I hate episodes dub. I love japanese seiyu

I agree here. I heard Lulu's voice in English and I almost cried. I think it's terrible. The more you watch Japanese the easier it gets. You learn to read fast and then you're actually getting the culture and what the director originally intended. Especially in such a dramatic series like CG, I think it's very important to have the original seiyuu.

I love both a lot. But Nunnally might be the tie-breaker for me ... her voice makes my ears bleed in English. If she wasn't in it, I think I would've preferred the dubbed over the subbed.

Yeah, Nunally sounds like crap in the English version TBH. It sounds like she's got something in her nose.

Japanese. I did not take six semesters of Japanese language so that I could watch English dubs.

Hi there! I don't really have much to add to the actual discussion, but could you please edit your post so you actually spell out 'Japanese'? The term you're using could make some people uncomfortable, due to it's other meaning.

Why do the word "English" spell full while "Japanese" need to be shorten -__-
They are only "1" letter apart!?

I adored Fukuyama Jun as Lelouch. The deep voice makes him sound more like a leader and, arguably, the second Christ and less like some kid going through puberty.
Date/Time: 2009-04-22 00:17 (UTC)Posted by: [identity profile] inastr8jacket.livejournal.com
I'll watch it in either. I don't have a preference.

The Japanese version is obviously great, I prefer Fukujun over JYB and all that, but I don't have any problems with the dub. I think dub Geass is done pretty well, and you have some good voices in there. And then you have some not so good voices. But... for those, hearing Yuri Lowenthal as Suzaku makes up for it.

I-I'm totally serious. ♥

Uh, yeah, I definitely won't mind watching Geass in either language.

I have to admit, I only watched Japnese because it was the only streaming I could find because I don't youtube.

Then I realized it was on youtube in english AFTER I finished D:

I only listened to the Eng version because I found out the Seiyu of Lelouch was visiting nearby, and I wanted to see if it was worth it ^_^;;

Sadly, I preferred the Japanese version due to tone of voice.

I think anyone who thinks CG is a "TERRIBLE" dub has never heard a terrible dub in his or her entire life. You're taking modern dubs completely for granted. Compare it to dubs of the 90s and 80s, hell, anything from 4kids, then come back to me. Have a convenient example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OX9wtuHy3zc

Let's face it - when there are no Brooklyn accents, we have it GOOD.

That said, I have no preference.

I like both equally, but if I had to make a decision, I would say I prefer watching it in English. I'd much rather listen to things in my own language rather than listening to one thing and having to read another. The dub isn't perfect, but neither is the Japanese and there are plenty of things I prefer in one over the other, so I can't fairly decide on which is better. I thought the actors in both versions were great.

Admittedly, I twitched a little when I heard the way the dub pronounced Gino's last name, but I can't just flat-out hate a dub just for a mistake I was expecting anyway.
Date/Time: 2009-04-22 00:36 (UTC)Posted by: [identity profile] waftimah.livejournal.com
I prefer dub with subtitles. :O

I keep the volume down to avoid disturbing the other people I live with, so the subtitles are in case I miss something. As for dub vs. sub, it's just easier for me to understand the emotion and feelings in my native language. If I ever become fluent in Japanese, I'll probably switch.

I'll only watch subs if I have to or if the dubs are absolutely horrible, and Geass generally has good English actors.
Date/Time: 2009-04-22 00:40 (UTC)Posted by: [identity profile] dr-wats0n.livejournal.com
When it comes to Code Geass, I liked both the original and the dub in different ways. True, the original generally has better voice talent, but I think speaking English works better in the context of the show. The only serious complaint about the dub I can file is that the female voices were mostly lame and/or annoying.

I like both, but I prefer the Japanese --- possibly because I saw it first. Also, I like reading subtitles. Often I won't be able to figure out what people are saying unless there are subtitles, even in English movies. I don't know why. I'm just more of a reading person, I guess. :/

And I think both of Lelouch's voices are sexy to the extreme. Japanese possibly more so, if only because I love deep voices. Also, I'm not sure that I find it completely believable that the Black Knights would follow someone who sounds as young as the English voice is --- it's not bad, and it fits his age, but it makes him sound less intimidating, I think.
Date/Time: 2009-04-22 01:40 (UTC)Posted by: [identity profile] redwolftamer.livejournal.com
With Code Geass I can listen to either because they both have their merits. In a more general sense it really doesn't matter to me. If the dub is good then I won't mind watching the dub. And some dubs are just really fabulous, like Cowboy Bebop and Shin-Chan. If not, whatever, subtitles are fine, I'm so used to them that it doesn't change my level of enjoyment.

Now when it comes to live action movies, subtitled all the way. No matter what the movie is, for some reason the over-dubbing of live action movies are just terrible, and it's not just the lip-syncing, the acting is terrible.
Date/Time: 2009-04-22 01:41 (UTC)Posted by: [identity profile] assplund.livejournal.com
i prefer the japanese version.

imo it's kind of silly to complain about lelouch's voice sounding too old when the show has robots and magic eyes. i think his japanese voice fits his personality better and gives him an air of authority that his english voice just doesn't have.
Date/Time: 2009-04-22 03:15 (UTC)Posted by: [identity profile] kariavalon.livejournal.com
I agree to that~ I have a preference with the Japanese voices due to the air of authority and such. =] Some English voices work.. but sometimes it just doesn't.
Date/Time: 2009-04-22 01:48 (UTC)Posted by: [identity profile] mossygirl.livejournal.com
Japanese, because I deeply associate the characters with their Japanese voices. Also, Jun Fukuyama's voice is sexy, Yukana's voice is sexy, Wakamoto is sexyWakamoto.

That said, I really need to listen to the English dub since it does have *sparkles* Yuri Lowenthal (one of my favorite English VAs). In general I prefer Japanese dubs to English ones, but really it's a matter of what I "watched first." If I saw the English first (and it was decent), I tend to prefer the English, and vice versa. I usually see the Japanese first thanks to fansubs.

(I also can appreciate the Japanese a lot better after four years of Japanese classes; it's fun to understand some things without subtitles!)
