Was I the only one who thought that Shinsen & Ureshii sub for the Emperor's second line in episode 6 was a little off?
Didn't he say something along the lines of, "今クロヴィスと話した...急がなければな けかくご"? Basically, "I was talking to Clovis, we must speed up the plan(?). (I probably screwed up somewhere in both the Japanese sentence and the translation but I'm not claiming to be the purveyor of perfect Japanese. Oh, far from it. XD) But to translate that second part as, "He is on a beach now, at peace", can anyone see where that comes from? Or is this how they've always been, like, their level of translation? (Does that even make sense?) I've only watched episode 6 by them and I noticed some other little things but they weren't quite as odd as this and I always thought Shinsen was a good group so now I'm just curious.

Asking since I'm trying to burn stuff for a friend as part of a get-well present and I'd rather she not end up with odd subs. I personally watch RAWs & gg, since soft subs make taking caps for graphics easier, but the added notes are kind of annoying. So...thoughts?

EDIT: Too many comments, I give up. XD;; Just wanted to thank everyone for their input and I'm glad to see I wasn't the only one who noticed the mis-translation.

Then don't watch Shinsen either, as various forum posts on asuki and gamefaq's of all places about their episode seven have found gg to be superior. The examples pointed out on the afforementioned forums I find much more serious than your issues with gg you've listed above (ie: they called the Ashford's the family of Lelouch's mother). And snm_queen said what SHS-Ureshii translated that line as: "He is on a beach now, at peace".

.............

What? A beach? (Sorry I didn't see that, btw. It seemed to have slipped through in speed reading)

Okay, you'd better stick with gg, then. Shinsen probably rushed the subs through high hells or didn't want to bother in general, the earmark of a bad translation. At least gg's mistakes seemed honest.

I guess I'll stick solely to RAWs, after all.

GG sub Garasu No Kantai when no one else did. That's why I will stay with them.

I STILL am not sure what the series is about, you know.
Date/Time: 2006-12-01 11:32 (UTC)Posted by: [identity profile] rhyste.livejournal.com
...you know, I've subbed nearly all of it, and I can't tell you what the hell it's about.

- Sci-fi... but people breathe in space?
- Black hole in the universe that everything is being drawn towards
- Evil Emperor Guy voiced by Ishida Akira
- Random resistance trying to defeat said Emperor
- And Religion!
Date/Time: 2006-12-01 11:37 (UTC)Posted by: [identity profile] verity-isle.livejournal.com
Uh---UH. So. Was there a central goal in the plot? It looked...pretty odd from here.

Also, is it sad that I don't know my way around who seiyuus who at all?
Date/Time: 2006-12-01 11:38 (UTC)Posted by: [identity profile] thomasvye.livejournal.com
It's about a lot of things. It's about political resistance and personal rivalry (like Code Geass). Basically, the Universe has a new Emperor, Vetti Sforza (in my icon, voiced by Akira Ishida), and a people's army rises up to oppose his Empire. They're very scattered and shabby, with a few aristocrats giving resources, but they're mostly just people. Then they meet a space pirate and in him and his incredible battleship of glass, they believe they have found the weapon they need. And it develops from there. :)

Does it lean towards the thematic or the plot-astic? I mean---like, rag-tag Avalanche against the Shinra Corporation, or Paul Atreides against House Harkonnen? The choice either makes or breaks a rebellion plot, imo.
Date/Time: 2006-12-01 11:45 (UTC)Posted by: [identity profile] thomasvye.livejournal.com
Well the rebellion plot and the manouvers against it certainly drives the action, but I think it's more character driven than anything. It's like a drama between maybe six or seven of the main characters and their various obsessions with each other which plays out on a very big scale.

I agree with thomasvye; more character driven.

While the resistance v. empire is part of it, there is also a prophecy about the unification of the galaxy and a two headed eagle. The series kind of dwells on the meaning of the two headed eagle bit and the unification, fitting various characters into the "role" of the two headed eagle. Prophecy is more central to the plot, but the central "conflict scenes" and battles take place between the two fighting sides.

Thanks for watching GaraKan. :D
Date/Time: 2006-12-01 11:33 (UTC)Posted by: [identity profile] thomasvye.livejournal.com
Ah, I am passionate about that show! I felt very lonely watching it last season as I only knew a few people who did, but now my persisitance is paying off and a few friends have started watching it too! :D I bought DVDs 4&5 (on presale) yesterday and was excited all day! \^-^/ I hope Code Geass's DVDs will eventyually be so shiny.
Date/Time: 2006-12-01 11:38 (UTC)Posted by: [identity profile] rhyste.livejournal.com
:D! I made fun of GaraKan a lot at first, but it got pretty good around ep 7-8ish. Ralph is a bit of a pain in the side, but I dig Rachel. Speaking of the DVD's, did you hear about the DVD-only eps? D: I am curious about what DVD 17 will be, because 16 -> 17 seem to flow right into each other... ah well.

I hope the Geass DVD's are nice too. I want to order those, but ouch, one episode on DVD 1. >_>; I hope they're really 16:9. ><;;
Date/Time: 2006-12-01 11:43 (UTC)Posted by: [identity profile] thomasvye.livejournal.com
Yeah, I have to say there, one episode on a DVDis a bit 'ouch' considering Japanese DVDs are expensive anyway and importing them is also expensive. Garakan's DVDs are so nice they are worth it. They all come with an object (set of beautiful pin badges, a pendant - the first one had Kureo's harmonica!) and an Okama artbook of character and animation designs. Code Geass' first DVD doesn't make me jump up and down...I did hear about the DVD only stuff; that's what I like of a DVD!

I *adore* Rachel! She's so crazy! I think you could have made a whole show just out of her and Ralph fighting over Vetti (he's completely oblivious! lol)

Heh, well, tbh, I was biased to begin with since I am from gg. ._.;

Also, the game faqs thread if you're interested (http://boards.gamefaqs.com/gfaqs/genmessage.php?board=2000121&topic=32117479)... post by ookina talks about SHS-Ureshii stuff.

I see. Well, then, that was rude of me. ^^; (I freelance as a translator, and it's been my pet peeve for as long as I've read translated fiction) At least you guys translated it when nobody else bothered and didn't mention beaches. That's a plus.

*read*

....

It actually looked pretty horrid. Whoa, Shinsen. Did they really want to take this project when they took it? O_o

Heh, no problem. I plan to relay errors people report for dvd re-releases anyway, so, you were being helpful. XD
Date/Time: 2006-12-01 11:56 (UTC)Posted by: [identity profile] verity-isle.livejournal.com
The way I said it still wasn't nice. ^^; Thank you, though. (How many errors have been reported thus far, anyway? I do have your subs all downloaded though not necessarily watched since I hate MKVs. I can help spot mistakes if there's not already a steady stream of reports)
Date/Time: 2006-12-01 12:04 (UTC)Posted by: [identity profile] rhyste.livejournal.com
Reports at this point can pretty much be summarized as me going places like here or web forums and digging through episode discussions. No really steady stream...more of a really awkward collection. XD Atm, most of the stuff for ep1 is stuff like "change Nightmare Flame -> Knightmare Frame" or "Change Person A's name" type of stuff. We've recently switched translators, and I was thinking of having the new one go over episodes one when the DVD rolls around.

but since shinsen does everything, the translator might have just lost it XDD
