Ok i know that it's requisite for any popular (some not so popular) anime to be dubbed, but i watched the bandai english trailer and was horrified to find that the first and one of the best lines in the show "Suzaku...I will CRUSH BRITANNIA" was changed to the very un-Lelouch "This Britannia will be obliterated"...the parts that were in english like "yes your highness" were they carried over like a sane decision?? oh no lets change it to "happily your highness" (maybe shinsen should provide the scripts). Thats not to say i won't watch it when it airs on adult swim, i'll just be upset and spend each episode nitpicking. Also isn't Lelouch's voice too high pitched? i'm just disappointed again i guess *sigh*
anyone else?

Yeah I agree that the "Suzaku, I will destroy/crush Britannia" was one of the best lines in the show. I cried over when they changed it, and some lol'd...

Code "Gee-ahs"? "Gay-ass"?

I am staying far far far away from the dub. It just saddens me that this show will now become another emo-weeaboo show :( I hope it doesn't kill my fandom like it generally does.

Your icon made me LOL xD

I personaly thought Lulu's voice was too deep for a 17-year-old anyway; but I liked it, because it just fit his Lulu-ness.

I'm not all that fussed; sure, the lines will loose impact, and it won't be as moving watching chibi Lulu say such a weak line, but meh.

What really annoys me is the fact that what they changed the line to is such a mothful, and it doesn't seem to flow properly; I mean come on, we use the language that has at least ten words that mean 'walk'-so why are we changing a perfectly good line to one full of long words that no ten year old would say in casual observation?

I most likely won't be watching the dub. Not because I already have the shoddily-subbed Japanese version on DVD, but because Madman Australia decided to cancel Adult Swim.
Dissapointment, much?

...The show hasn't even aired. The trailer had two words from Lulu. Yes, chibi!Lulu is horrendous, but still. That was most likely something they used from the auditions. Usually by the time a show airs, only six to seven episodes have been dubbed, so it's far too early for a decision now. 8|

"This Brittania will be obliterated!" isn't so bad as say, "SUZAKU, THIS COUNTRY SUCKS." If you want a bucthering of a series, go look at Ghost Stories. It went from being a series anime about hauntings to being a (albeit hilarious) series about smart-mouthed kids. ("I've only had sex with my baby-sitter!" for example. XD I ♥ Chris Patton.) Granted, it's a bad example since Ghost Stories dub is a hundred times better than the oringal imo, but at least they're trying to stick to the original script with Geass. Let's face it, matching flaps with words, seconds, minutes, whatever, isn't an easy job.

Really, people, let's wait until an episode actually ~airs~ before we start bashing. (Sorry if this is snippy it's just that... Holy crap, it hasn't even aired and it's alredy "horrible". I loved the original Japanese dialougue and voice acting as the next person but... :/)

IAWTC ^_^ Let's not overreact after hearing such tiny, tiny snips of dialogue, yes?

Anyway, I'm always of the opinion that, if you don't like dubs, then you just shouldn't watch them -- I follow this practice and it keeps me quite happy.

WORD. 8| I'm getting so sick of all these sub elitists bitching and the dub hasn't even come out yet.

I just wanted to say that I agree and the picture of young!Lelouch going "SUZAKU, THIS COUNTRY SUCKS." made me laugh.

When I first heard that they were dubbing Code Geass, I was fairly devestated. I'm just a tad obsessed with the anime, and I didn't want it turning into some fad that people watch only because it's an anime and it's on Adult Swim. I didn't want them choosing voice actors that would clash with my favorite characters.

So my dad called me an elitist.

I thought about it for a while. I've decided that more good things will come from it than bad. I'll be able to purchase more merchandise from stores that are just down the street. There will be even more doujinshi. I'll have more people to roleplay it with. More people will know what I'm talking about when I ramble on about it. I'll be able to find more Code Geass cosplayers at Anime Expo. To top it all off, my friend who I've been trying to get into it for ages agreed that she would watch the dub, since she hates reading subtitles.

Maybe I won't like the voices as much. Maybe they won't be as good. What matters the most is that more people will learn about it. The hardcore anime fans that catch it on TV and those of us that prefer the subs can still watch the subs. I totally understand where your coming from because I was there, too. I think that in the end it's better to take all the good that it will bring and just not watch the dubs if it really bothers you. Can you really complain about more readily available merchandise? :3

Word to the max.

I love my subs, and once one set of voices get cemented in my head as the cast, everything else afterwards is inferior. This is why, despite all the rave reviews of them, I can't stand to watch FMA or Cowboy Bebop in English or Digimon in Japanese. But I'll still take all the cool stuff that comes with American broadcast.

Here's to hoping Adult Swim fanbrats won't take over our lovely fandom! :D

Please bare in mind that the dub has to take into consideration lipsinc, which is the main culprit for changes in scripts.

Not only do they have to match words to the mouth movements, but it's hard to express all the nuances that the japanese language has in those 3 mouth movements. Dubbing is hard work.

I thought it sounded fine. As for Lulu's voice, I'm actually pretty sure they said that they casted who they casted because Sunrise asked for him for that part. If that's the way they wanted it to be, that's the way it's going to be. I can't wait until it's on AS cos I'm so totally going to watch it!

That's not so bad
Are you guys too young to remember Gundam Wing and Sailor Moon? They butchered the hell out of those shows -_- go to your loacl video store and rent the Sailor Moon R moive and watch the Dubded and Japanese tracks and get back to me...

I will CRUSH BRITANNIA" changed to "This Britannia will be obliterated" Isn't that drastic of a change.
They didn't soften it like they would have say... 6-7 years ago...

It isn't as lame as in Gundam Wing... "God of Death" to "The Great Destroyer" "I'll Kill you." to "I'll get you." -_- How lame is that.

as konekodarkness said, they have to sinc the dialog with the mouth movements

I feel you tho. Once you watch Anime in Japanese, it's hard to go back to dubs...

I thought Gundam Wing was decent until I heard it in Japanese. After that, Duo's Cocky Surfer Boy voice was like nails on a chalk board to me.

Personly I like voices... a sexy voice is SUCH a turn on for me and many Japanese seiyuu have voice's that are just... X3 *shudder* *melt* |3
I mean...Ryōtarō Okiayu OMFG! his deep rich voice is practically orgasmic...
Yes. I'm a freak. I know. And I admit I'm an elitist seiyuu hoe snob and will avoid watching Dubbed anime if I can help it.

But I also admit, they have been getting better and getting voice actors that can actually act.

Inuyasha was well done, and I was rather impressed with what they did with FMA and I actually like the Dub of Cowboy Bebop better that the Japanese version... tho I'd still take the Japanese version 9 times out of 10, I mean they DID totally fail with Naruto -_- believe it Datebayo! But that's why God created dual language dvds and subtitles

Just remember, it could be worse ...
4kids could have gotten it and DESTROYED it like they did One Piece. Thank GOD Funimation took over. Sure I still like Sanji's Japanese voice better, but at least now he doesn't sound like a compleat dumbass -_-

Dude, I love dubbed Gundam Wing to pieces. I might watch Japanese for Heero's sexy, but Duo cracks me up! I think they did a great job with Gundam Wing; those cuts you mention were only in the airing and not the DVDs. Also, if you sidestep that obvious attempt at a tagline "Believe it," Naruto also handles its material fairly well. I would still be watching dubbed Naruto if the very idea of Naruto didn't make me want to kick things.

Again...I admit to being an elitist seiyuu snob.

Midorikawa Hikaru (Heero) is my Fav Seyuu of all time and anyone that attempts to voice a character he has voiced has failed before they have even begun to me... it's not them personally...it's just Midorikawa-sama is the man. period Midorikawa IS Heero Yuy and any thing else is just a cheap imitation.

I like Scott McNeil (Duo) I met him at a con once and he's an awesome guy, but to me he will never hold a candle to Toshihiko Seki

I also hate how they swapped out Zechs Merquise voice for then raspy evil sounding one XP...

They did good with Quatre and Wufie
and Treize... as much as I love Ryōtarō Okiayu I will give props to David Kaye, he made for a good Sessoumaru as well.

and ya... they made Uncut eps...eventually. And they still cut most of the blood from the DVD version...

And, ya. Still not defending Naurto...I don't like the Japanese version enough to defend any attempt they did to dub it. The only Seiyuu I respect in it is Kazuhiko Inoue (Kakashi) cause he's been around forever and is the fucking man. Naruto annoyed me before and now its just more annoying dubbed

It isn't as lame as in Gundam Wing... "God of Death" to "The Great Destroyer" "I'll Kill you." to "I'll get you." -_- How lame is that.

That was a childrens' television censor, though, not a decision made by the translators themselves.

Doesn't change the fact that it was lame. It only makes it not the translator's fault it was lame.

I haven't seen the trailer yet, but I'm actually excited to see the dub. I always prefer the original, but dub release means there will be official DVDs, which is awesome to me since I like to own things hardcopy. (It still hasn't been licensed in my country, though. D: *waits*) And new fans will be awesome. Sure, there'll be a few idiots, there always are, but there'll also be a lot of cool new fans.

I am really curious to hear this trailer now, though. Are they keeping the original character names? As long as Lelouch and Suzaku don't end up as Lex and Sam, I'll be happy. XD;;

Well, remember that when you watch a series done by one cast for a while it's always going to be hard to adjust to it being done by a different cast, regardless of whether or not there's a language barrier or if the second version is better than the first. In the musicals I was in when I was in high school, after basically eating, sleeping, and breathing our version for a few months the professional versions didn't feel right to me, regardless of their quality. It's the same thing here, you're used to the Japanese voices and the way the lines are translated by the fansub you watched and so you consider it to be the 'right' way to do it, and no matter how much better another version is you won't like it because it's not the version you're used to.

Honestly this is the source of a good chunk of the dub hate out there, that most people reject a dub because it's just not the version they're used to.

While I generally do not like dubs at all, I can understand about the "Yes, your highness" being changed. It's probably because it takes longer to say it in Japanese so to match the lip movement, they had to change the English script.
Date/Time: 2008-03-22 21:50 (UTC)Posted by: [identity profile] kihayo.livejournal.com
thats a valid point.

However, the dub voice actors could always drag the phrase out as well to emphasize they're being controlled.

I'm fine with dub and sub (I watch more sub because I don't have the money to buy dubs XD), so I'm still rather excited about the CG dub. And I like Johnny Young Bosch as Lulu and Yuri Lowenthal as Suzaku...I think they will do at least a 'good' job :]

And I couldn't help but notice they gave Suza the same dub voice as Yuri from KKM, who also happens to have Sakurai Takahiro as a seiyuu XD

And perhaps in the trailer they just played one of their really bad lines? Like the DN dub...They really crapped out when L told Light he's L. I don't think I've ever heard such a horrible butchering of a such an epic line XD

Damnit I knew shot like that was going to happen. it like naruto's dattebayo replaced with "BELIEVE IT!" eve 5 fucking minutes. or the mess and sadness that is prince of tennis english dub -_-. This is exactly why I refuse to even consider watching the english dub CG its just gonna taint my perception of the anime. Some anime should just not be done in english. this is one of them! can't find decent voice actors that match the japanese voice actors enough, then LEAVE IT THE HELL ALONE! damn power rangers reject.
