Ok since I posted a gripe against the dub I thought it only fitting that I post a follow up. My initial reaction which I'm sure i shared with many was "You Maniacs! You blew it up! Ah, damn you! God damn you all to hell!" In defense of the dubbers they made a few decisions that i agree with. They did change the aggravating trailer "This Britannia will be obliterated" (though i still think obliterated is a poor choice of words), they cast the English Straight Cougar (s-cry-ed) and Alucard (Hellsing) {I think his orange will be phenomenal}, they kept the other "Yes my lord!" so can someone please tell me why in the name of all that is both holy and unholy did they insist on having loser soldier boy say "happily your highness" I'm sure they've at least seen their lines in the original Japanese, you'd think as an actor you'd want to stay as close to the source material as possible, and the emperor didn't even mention the Ragnares race though he did say something about the Ragnarok. It's only the first episode so i hope that they can pull it together because honestly I'd love to see a good dub come out of this, the show is so spectacular that any deviation from what we know should be is disheartening (to put it mildly) Still C.C.'s intro was surprisingly good, and they have 24 more episodes to go, fingers crossed.

For those who have yet to see it...

Vash!=Lulu

End.

I had to leave the room at one point, too.

Good.

...pulling a Lelouch vi Britannia here, while tempting, will just be too darn predictable and, not to mention, cliche so I'll just leave it as is xxxxD.

Having gotten into anime watching Ocean's Gundam Wing and DBZ dubs, I must give you a resounding HELL YES! :D

I do think Bosch has a good voice, though. I don't even think he's wrong for Lelouch cos hey, if chickvoice!Fukuyama can do it...they should've gotten the voice director who did FFXII. That dude was brilliant. He did the voice recording for FFXII from a zero starting point, rather than straight adapt from japanese like most others are oft to do. I think CG deserved that, too, cos it's not everyday you get an epic piece of work like it.

Back to Bosch, I like him in some of the things he did in games. I especially like him as Guy from Tales of the Abyss. And that one was delivered very well cos on top of the VA being a professional, the script translation was /good/. If the lines were awkward to begin with, you can't expect the VA to perform a miracle and de-awkward it. -.-;;

It's not a matter of being awkward at all. It's a matter of, "I can't see that voice coming out of his mouth."

I like Bosch. I liked him as Adam, I liked him as Vash, I like him at cons... But his voice is not Lulu's.

I judge that way. If I read a manga and I imagine a voice then watch the anime and it's that voice, I praise the staff behind the anime like mad for being damn good at their job. CLAMP's done that several times. This English Code Geass didn't do it for me, and not just with Lulu's voice, which makes me sad.

There are some game dubs where I prefer the voices to the originals, even. Anime isn't there yet by a long ways, I'd say, but the fact that one similar industry has reached that point is a good sign. If nothing else, it puts pressure on the anime industry if fans are growing used to dubs as good as the ones video games are putting out.

I think they did a good job with the dub. I was a little annoyed with C.C. because it sounded too sweet unlike her ruthless personality.

I was pretty happy with the dub. I don't really like dubs, but it was okay. It could have been much worse. I do wish they got a deeper voice for Lelouch (I am in love with the japanese voice), but the other voices weren't bad. (Also I agree that "obliterate" was too strong a word for young!Lulu.)

One thing I do have to say in response to the comments on the changing of some words (even though others have said it already, just thought I'd squeeze in my two cents): (While this doesn't always apply) The dubs often need to have the words changed slightly (though they try to keep the same meaning) because the direct translation of the original Japanese may have fewer or more syllables and they need to match the words with the mouth movements. Otherwise it would look really strange; someone coul be talking but the mouth wouldn't be moving. I've even SEEN anime where a character's mouth was moving but there were no words.

And despite bad dubbing, it can contribute to the fan community. Then when those poor, lost, dub-watching sheep wander here, we can lead them to the path of righteousness and subs. XD

*amIlate?*
I really liked the dub. There were some voices that were kinda... weird to hear (like Shirley's), but I think I'll get used to them. Other than that I was pretty happy with all the voices, especially Lloyd's. (And let me just say listening to Rivalz talk and hearing Takato's voice was just kinda holyshitawesome. But that's just me.)

Also, I'm glad they changed it to 'Happily, your Highness'. It made the scene creepier to me.

like i said, many people thought the same of Fukuyama, yanno. It was only by the director's explicit er...direction, that Fukuyama was made to stretch his limit and this in turn open up doors in the voice acting industry for him. Perhaps it's just my opinion then but I'm not the biggest fan of american dubs in general yet i won't decry it because i've seen some that are well done by virtue of incredible voice direction, acting and translation.

Clovis = Yay.
Lloyd = Still fabulous~
Orange = OMGYESPLZ.
Rivalz = ... DD:
Lelouch = Oh dear god, what did they do to you?
Kallen = Please stop showing those "fellas" what "this badass mother" can do.

No opinion on everyone else just yet. :c

You managed to sound disagreeable without actually disagreeing with me.

I'm sure Bosch could have done it. There was one line he said in the episode where one word from it sounded Luluesque to me. So I know he has it. He's just not being pressed to keep it, which isn't to say he fails or something. I'd say that's the fault of the director for not having a.. fan pleasing image? in his mind to adhere to.

Which is what the Japanese director did. Took a guy he knew had the ability and made him fit the vision, not let him do what he usually does and leave Lulu with a high voice.

I don't hate Bosch and I don't hate English dubs. I usually watch anime in English simply because I'm lazy and I usually like the voices. Hence why I'm so disappointed that, of all the anime I could have been disappointed with, it had to be Code Geass.

lol i forgot how stupid clovis's speech was xD and kallen is like >_>
(i disliked the "madam president" i mean, WHO SAYS THAT IN ENGLISH to a STUDENT COUNCIL PRESIDENT?! it sounds like a japanese person translated the script and [brainless] north american voice actors just droned the words)

I found it okai, the only voice i didn't like was Shirley's >.< her voice just make wanna strangle her to death, it was creepy hearing her, Lelouch's voice was okai, his voice actor was ichigo's voice actor right?

LoL! Have I? I hope I hadn't sounded too confusing. I've been told that I'm a word mincer sometimes. -.-;; But I suppose that's my long-winded way of saying 'let's agree to disagree'...but you sounded like you agreed with me a little in your last reply. xxxP Unless I interpreted your words wrongly.

Yeah, I think there's a bit of misinterpretation in there...

But please don't make me go find it while I'm tired. Oo...

The Death Note dub is awful. Both L and Light sound like angsty teenagers, they screwed Mello over, and Near gets the the best voice, wtf XD.

Plus their emphasis when saying things like :Kira really annoys me. Its like their tying to speak spanish or somethign T_T
Date/Time: 2008-05-02 03:31 (UTC)Posted by: [identity profile] silverfox1027.livejournal.com
I disagree. I think Light's voice is perfect (he is an angsty teenager, after all) and I thought L's voice was pretty sexy. I actually haven't heard Mello and Near yet, though, since I haven't watched past episode 23 or so.

I don't like the way they say Kira, though. It sounds like they're trying to hard to roll the r. But otherwise, it's the best dub since FMA, imo.

Personally, maybe I'm just way too old and too accustomed to the days of god awful chop jobs that go by the name of dubs, but...

Ditto to this and basically the whole comment. I guess it is because of my past experience with dubs, but I'm relatively interested in this one. If people want bad dubs, they aren't hard to find (Prince of Tennis, anyone? -- and that's pretty recent too). This is not the bottom of the barrel.

Every instance of physical violence completely removed via odd POV changes? All nudity problems solved with a generic fill tool? Names changed for better comprehension among the under-ten set? Card layouts simplified to the point of complete silliness? The invention of the 'Shadow Realm' as a means of punishment (as opposed to, ya know, death) and plot device for everything under the sun? The addition of positively bizarre accents and voice filters? Who even knows about the original dialogue... (Gimme the Abridged version any day.)

... that is a horror that should stay hidden, seriously. And I have no YGO icons. Rats.
Date/Time: 2008-05-02 14:06 (UTC)Posted by: [identity profile] phyrexians.livejournal.com
No, he's a teenager but he's not a typical whiny one. Its impossible to take Light seriously with his voice, he just sounds whiny XD. L is retarded too, especially the way he draws out the crunches when he eats something lol, wtf! The Light in japanese is very sexy sounding, and has great range when descending into madness or just talking XD.

KIRRRRA. ShiNEEEEGAMEEEEE. It's way too much emphasis on those words X_x.

I think Death Note may rate as one of the worst dubs Ive ever seen, as the VA's have no range either. I dont watch FMA, but the only dub Ive liked so far is Cowboy Bebop.
